Mottramite pseudomorph after Wulfenite with Calcite

Locality: Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region , Namibia

Specimen Size: 9.5 x 8.3 x 5.3 cm (cabinet)

ex.  Dr. Joseph R. Kaufman
ex.  Rob Smith

Some of the most interesting pseudomorphs after Wulfenite have come from Tsumeb. This piece is a gorgeous and showy example of deep green colored Mottramite forming pseudomorphs after tabular Wulfenite crystals. To top it off, the entire reverse side of the specimen is coated by sharp, little, gemmy Calcite rhombs. The specimen is rather intricate and three-dimensional, and looks good from several angles. Despite some damage, this remains as a good example of this rarely seen phenomenon in the mineral world.

Malachite pseudomorph after Azurite

Locality: Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region , Namibia

Specimen Size: 10.6 x 8.3 x 5.5 cm (cabinet)

ex.  Kathage
ex.  Rob Smith

Kathage Collection (he worked in the mine from 1960?s - 1990?s as a fitter).

Large, velvety, chatoyant blades of green Malachite which have completely replaced Azurite forming a "fan-like" orientation of crystals. The specimen is good sized, and fairly priced for such a good representation of this classic Tsumeb occurrence.

ex.  Rob Smith

A wonderful combination specimen featuring subdued green color blocky pseudomorphic Malachite crystals after Azurite which are associated with non-pseudomorphed blue Azurite crystals on the reverse side all sitting atop a coating of dark yellowish-green Duftite on matrix. Not your typical Malachite ps. Azurite specimen to be sure.

Dolomite cast after Calcite

Locality: Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region , Namibia

Specimen Size: 11.7 x 9.2 x 4.0 cm (cabinet)

ex.  Rob Smith

The great variety of casts and pseudomorphs from Tsumeb never ceases to amaze me. This is a relatively simple and not terribly rare replacement, but because it?s a ?white on white? replacement, it was not very easy to photograph. The specimen is comprised of very very light bluish-green color Dolomite crystals forming casts after Calcite. The are hollow shells over the top of the original crystals, almost like thin capes that gently drape across each corresponding face. If you are a fan of casts from Tsumeb, this is one for you.

Dolomite pseudomorph after Wulfenite

Locality: Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Specimen Size: 16.0 x 11.8 x 5.5 cm (large cabinet)
Largest pseudomorph: 3.8 cm.

ex.  Ed Swaboda
ex.  Rob Smith

This is easily one of my top few favorite specimens in the entire update. I have not seen another large cabinet specimen of this material in such great condition. A piece like this is by no means a common occurrence from Tsumeb (or any other locality), and as I've said before, I'm a big fan of the various pseudomorphs and casts from this locality. This significant and historic (former Swoboda collection !) specimen is comprised of small, light beige color Dolomite rhombohedra coating, partially replacing, or completely replacing red-orange color, tabular Wulfenite crystals. As you can see from the photos, there are still some Wulfenite crystals present on the piece, but there are also plenty of hollow casts where a Wulfenite crystal once existed and is now gone. The piece is in great shape overall, plus it's very dramatic and showy. It is glued to the acrylic base that accompanies the specimen, but I think it could be removed fairly easily if one so desired. It is not the sturdiest specimen in the world, so we might have to make special arrangements with anyone interested in purchasing the piece, because shipping could be tricky. Nonetheless, it remains an impressive and very attractive display specimen of this hard to find occurrence.

Quartz cast after (?)

Locality: Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Specimen Size: 9.5 x 4.5 x 4.0 cm (cabinet)

ex.  Rob Smith

An attractive very light green color cast of Quartz crystals after an unknown mineral (perhaps Calcite?). It appears that the light green color is caused by a micro inclusion of Malachite.

Malachite pseudomorphs after Azurites with Cerussite and Arsentsumebite

Locality: Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Specimen Size: 6.5 x 5.5 x 5.1 cm (small cabinet)
Largest pseudomorph: 2.2 cm.

ex.  Bill Pinch
ex.  Rob Smith

A great association specimen from noted rare species collector, Bill Pinch. This specimen features one, predominant, euhedral, complete, sharp, blocky pseudomorph of Malachite after Azurite protruding from a matrix consisting of additional Malachite pseudomorphs after Azurite plus white/colorless, gemmy, sharp crystals of Cerussite. The final touch to this beauty is some small spherical aggregates of apple-green color Arsentsumebite scattered here and there. You don?t see many pieces like this, especially with the highly coveted Arsentsumebite association.

Quartz casts/epimorphs after Wulfenite with Duftite

Locality: Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Specimen Size: 6.8 x 4.6 x 2.5 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Quartz cast: 6.0 mm.

ex.  Rob Smith

What a gorgeous cast/epimorph specimen. I am a big fan of pseudomorphs and casts from worldwide localities, and this one is certainly one of the more interesting and attractive specimens of said material that I have seen from Tsumeb. It features several casts of sugary, colorless Quartz crystals after Wulfenite. You can see in a few of the broken casts that they are completely hollow inside, so these are not pseudomorphs, but casts (sometimes called epimorphs or perimorphs). To top it off, the casts are sitting on wonderfully contrasting green Duftite on matrix. You gotta love the diversity of Tsumeb minerals.

Mottramite casts after Calcite

Locality: Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Specimen Size: 7.0 x 6.4 x 2.3 cm (small cabinet)

Another very attractive cast or epimorph specimen of dark forest green color, botryoidal Mottramite after rhombic Calcite. You can see some of the broken casts are completely hollow inside where the Calcite has totally dissolved away.

This attractive small cabinet specimen features several good-looking, very well-formed, sharp, sword-shaped, pseudomorphs of forest-green Malachite after deep blue Azurite on matrix. The pseudomorphs range from blocky to tabular in shape and most are virtually damage free.
