Copal / Young Amber from Colombia with insect inclusions

Copal is classified as a "young amber", a form of preserved / fossilized tree resin.  True amber is older than copal with most ambers ranging from 10 to 30 million years old.  In a general sense, the word copal is used to describe a hardened resinous substance which is found in an intermediate stage of hardening and polymerization between softer / "gummier" resins and amber.  The paleodirect website states that: " copal contains inclusions of modern living life-forms whereas true fossil amber contains inclusions mostly of EXTINCT prehistoric life."  Interestingly, the term copal comes from the Nahuatl / Aztec word "copalli" which translates into "incense".

We recently came across this parcel of Colombian copal at the Tucson Show.  We were stunned at not only the size of the specimens, but the tremendous amount of insect inclusions, along with the superb quality pieces.  Many of the copals in this lot are not just gemmy, but several are remarkably WATER CLEAR which is not common, especially in pieces this size.  The most significant aspect of these specimens is that most of them are PACKED with insects, many pieces containing over 100 individual inclusions, which is exceptionally rare for this material.  Most specimens we've seen of Colombian copal contain one or two insects per piece, and we have never encountered such richly packed specimens like the ones we're offering below.

Copal / Young Amber with insect inclusions

Locality: Colombia

Specimen Size: 19.3 x 4.8 x 4.2 cm (large cabinet)
Largest insect inclusion: 9 mm

By far this is the biggest and best piece in the lot! This large cabinet display specimen is packed with over 100 insect inclusions featuring mainly flies (Diptera) along with wasps (Hymenoptera), termites (Isoptera), caddisfly (Trichoptera), caterpillar (Lepidoptera larva), ambrosia beetle (Platypododae), rove beetle (Staphylinidae) and bark beetle (Scolytinae). I honestly have never seen another specimen as large and as rich as this one. You can see from the close up photos that this piece brings a lot to the table, and you can spend a great deal of time looking at it under magnification to see all of the impressively well-preserved insects inside! For the size, it's amazingly transparent, and not filled with crazing, cracks or internal "cloudiness" that would ordinarily prevent one from seeing all the fine detail inside. Truly a magnificent example of this wonderful material from Colombia.

Copal / Young Amber with insect inclusions (2 piece set)

Locality: Colombia

Specimen Size: 15.1 x 7.1 x 1.6 cm (large cabinet)
Largest insect inclusion: 1.3 cm

This specimen is actually a two-piece set, as it once was a whole specimen, but unfortunately became separated, so we're offering both specimens together. You can see in the first three photos, how the smaller piece fits onto the larger specimen. Overall both pieces are impressive with over 100 insect inclusions featuring mainly flies (Diptera) along with tiny parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera), termites (Isoptera), caddisfly (Trichoptera), caterpillar (Lepidoptera larva), ambrosia beetle (Platypododae), rove beetle (Staphylinidae) and bark beetle (Scolytinae). As you can see from the close up photos, this piece has a lot going on, and really catches one's eye with the plethora of insect life that was frozen inside. A very worthwhile set to pick up for your collection.

Copal / Young Amber with insect inclusions

Locality: Colombia

Specimen Size: 9.6 x 7.1 x 1.2 cm (cabinet)
Largest insect inclusion: 8 mm

This rich golden Copal specimen is loaded with approximately 100 insect inclusions consisting mainly of termites (specifically termite wings) (Isoptera) a single ant (Formicidae), an ant-like stone beetle (Scydmaenidae) and caddisflies (Trichoptera).  One of the inclusions could be a species of spider, based upon the form, but I can't say conclusively. The piece is notably gemmy / transparent and really looks good with a bit of backlighting to see in the insect inclusions. I'm always impressed when one finds a piece this size with such good clarity and so many insects preserved within. Please note: There is a spot in the corner of the specimen that looks like it might have a leaf preserved inside, though we can't be completely sure.

Copal / Young Amber with insect inclusions

Locality: Colombia

Specimen Size: 10.3 x 8.2 x 2.1 cm (cabinet)
Largest insect inclusion: 6 mm

A remarkably GEM quality / WATER CLEAR specimen of this fantastic Colombian Copal featuring approximately 100 insect inclusions, mainly flies (Diptera), ants (Formicidae) and bark beetles (Scolytinae). The entire specimen is a like a piece of golden glass, a quality that is rarely seen in such large pieces of this material. Usually once a piece is more than a few mm thick, it becomes cloudy and crazed leaving very little room to view what's inside. This piece must have hardened under ideal conditions as it has amazing clarity for a larger specimen. .

Copal / Young Amber with insect inclusions

Locality: Colombia

Specimen Size: 9.6 x 7.2 x 1.2 cm (cabinet)
Largest insect inclusion: 7 mm

A big piece of Copal from Colombia featuring a leafhopper (Cicadellidae) and a fly (Diptera) plus a couple smaller unidentified insects.  This piece unlike  all others in the lot actually shows a texture on the reverse side where it clearly was separated from the bark of the tree, giving it more character than ther others.  A fairly priced near cabinet sized specimen to add to your collection.

Copal / Young Amber with insect inclusions

Locality: Colombia

Specimen Size: 11.2 x 8.6 x 2.5 cm (cabinet)
Largest insect inclusion: 1.2 cm

This beautiful and very gemmy cabinet sized display specimen of Copal from Colombia features approximately 80 insect inclusions mainly flies (Diptera) and ants (Formicidae). The close up photos show the great detail of the wonderfully preserved insects inside the piece. The piece has great clarity for the size, and to have so many insects in a single specimen is rare for this material.

Copal / Young Amber with insect inclusions

Locality: Colombia

Specimen Size: 10.8 x 3.2 x 0.7 cm (cabinet)
Largest insect inclusion: 8 mm

This thin elongated piece of Copal arguably has the highest "population density" of insects of any specimen in the lot as there are approximately 100 ambrosia beetles (Platypodidae) and a few midges (Diptera). The beetles look like they're marching almost like ants, and the midges make for a great contrast against the "rice grain"-esque beetles frozen inside. One of my favorite pieces in the lot especially because the internal clarity is so fine that you can see right through to the insects trapped within.

Copal / Young Amber with insect inclusions

Locality: Colombia

Specimen Size: 11.2 x 4.6 x 1.3 cm (cabinet)
Largest insect inclusion: 8 mm

Arguably this piece has the FINEST clarity of any piece in the lot as it's virtually WATER CLEAR throughout and features a wide range of insects including small flies (Diptera), along with parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera) plus one large winged termite (Isoptera), one large true bug (Heteroptera) and two bark beetles (Scolytinae). Some of my favorite insects are seen in this piece, and it's because of the tremendous gemminess which allows one to clearly view them whether they're on the surface or directly in the center. A great overall piece of this wonderful material.

A lovely piece of gemmy golden Copal featuring approximately 50 insect inclusions. The species seen within include termites (Isoptera) and tiny flies (Diptera). The close up photos on this piece reveal some of the most detailed and beautiful insects due to a few crystal clear areas for viewing. If you collect this material, this is a great one to pick up for a good price as you can see a lot of well-preserved insects.

Copal / Young Amber with insect inclusions

Locality: Colombia

Specimen Size: 8.7 x 3.9 x 3.2 cm (small cabinet)
Largest insect inclusion: 4 mm

This is one of the thickest, and wonderfully insect-packed pieces of Copal in the lot. This one is special as it features a couple of interesting "club"-like plant structures (some have thought that these could be horsetail shoots, but it's not likely) among over 40 termites (Isoptera) plus four scarab beetles (Termitodius sp.) plus termites (Inquilines). I love the fact that this piece has good three-dimensional form and the overall internal gemminess which allows the viewer to clearly see virtually everything that's frozen inside.
