Andradite (Demantoid) from the Sferlun Asbestos Mine, Italy

When it comes to Alpine Garnets, the Italian specimens are among the best in the world!  Whether it be Grossulars or Andradites, the Italian specimens have set the standard for the Alpine material.  The Demantoids from the famous Val Malenco (Malenco Valley) are among the most well-known and highly sought after Garnets in the world.  These are true Alpine classics, and the best specimens are breathtaking from the standpoint of color, crystal size, gemminess, luster and rarity.

I recently acquired a small parcel of specimens from the famous locality at Sferlun which were collected approximately 30 years ago (late 1970s – early 1980s), and remained in a private collection for decades.  I am told that these pieces originally came through the Magistretti collection in Italy.

These are great specimens of this world famous material, which are typically not seen very often on the market.  Good Demantoids from Italy are always in demand, and good matrix Garnets from ANY locality are certainly hard to come by.  Lastly, a few of the specimens in this lot are some of the largest individual pieces of this classic material that I’ve handled.

Andradite (var: Demantoid)

Locality: Sferlun Asbestos Mine, Val Malenco, Sondrio, Lombardia, Italy

Specimen Size: 3.7 x 2.6 x 1.7 cm (miniature)
Largest Crystal: 5 mm

A beautiful small miniature display specimen featuring dozens of sharp, semi-lustrous, rich green color, very gemmy, slightly modified, olive-green dodecahedra of Demantoid sitting against contrasting, stark white, fibrous Chrysotile/Asbestos on matrix. Virtually all of the crystals are damage free, and some are absolutely WATER-CLEAR. I have photographed some of the smaller crystals under the microscope to better illustrate their quality.

Andradite (var: Demantoid)

Locality: Sferlun Asbestos Mine, Val Malenco, Sondrio, Lombardia, Italy

Specimen Size: 5.5 x 3.9 x 2.7 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 3 mm

Dozens, if not hundreds of small, lustrous, bright green dodecahedra of Demantoid are intergrown forming crystallized “balls” or “mounds” which are separated by thin white-beige lines of Chrysotile/Asbestos. The piece is in great shape on the display side, with only a few small contacts on the back. For the sheer number of crystals, and the overall quality, this is certainly a worthwhile piece of this classic Alpine material.

Andradite (var: Demantoid)

Locality: Sferlun Asbestos Mine, Val Malenco, Sondrio, Lombardia, Italy

Specimen Size: 6.2 x 4.0 x 2.3 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 7 mm

Several larger, intergrown Demantoid crystals with good luster, sharpness and color sit atop host rock matrix. Despite some damage, the crystals are still larger than most from this locality, and the luster is certainly better than the majority of the pieces that I’ve handled from Sferlun. The piece is priced accordingly due to the damage, but overall, a good representative specimen from this classic locality.

Andradite (var: Demantoid)

Locality: Sferlun Asbestos Mine, Val Malenco, Sondrio, Lombardia, Italy

Specimen Size: 6.4 x 3.6 x 3.0 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 16 mm

Certainly the largest crystal of any piece in this lot resides on this specimen. It is well isolated with excellent dodecahedral form and despite how it may appear in the photos, it is not broken, but rather has an interrupted growth. All of the crystals are good sized for the locality with a beautiful golden-green hue. For luster, sharpness and gemminess, they are all above par. One of the smaller crystals is nearly water-clear with great luster. A good small cabinet matrix specimen with what would be considered a large crystal from Sferlun.

Andradite (var: Demantoid) (with rare chrome-green crystals!)

Locality: Sferlun Asbestos Mine, Val Malenco, Sondrio, Lombardia, Italy

Specimen Size: 4.4 x 3.4 x 2.6 cm (miniature)
Largest Crystal: 8 mm

Rarely, the Demantoids from Sferlun show two distinctly different colors on the same specimen. The larger crystals on this piece have a lovely yellowish-green hue, which is accentuated by the internal gemminess and great luster, but there are also a few very small, but INTENSE chrome-green colored dodecahedra of Demantoid that are very difficult to obtain from this locality. I have photographed the crystals under the microscope to better illustrate their color and quality. Overall, the piece is in great shape with the main crystal being so beautifully isolated in the center of the specimen. This is worthy and hard to find miniature display specimen of these classic Alpine Garnets.

No. ANDIT4117 - $ 1200.00 (=~ CAN$ 1570.27)

Andradite (var: Demantoid)

Locality: Sferlun Asbestos Mine, Val Malenco, Sondrio, Lombardia, Italy

Specimen Size: 10.1 x 8.1 x 4.1 cm (cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 6.5 mm

A great cabinet display piece of Demantoid with dozens of yellow-green dodecahedra. The crystals have good luster, gemminess and sharp form which are sitting amongst fibrous off-white color Chrysotile/Asbestos on matrix. Most of the crystals are completely damage free, with only spot near the top of the piece where it was contacted upon extraction from the pocket. Hand sized Demantoid specimens from Sferlun are certainly uncommon, and this piece is actually crystallized on BOTH sides, making it even more enticing.

No. ANDIT4118 - $ 2300.00 (=~ CAN$ 3009.68)

Andradite (var: Demantoid)

Locality: Sferlun Asbestos Mine, Val Malenco, Sondrio, Lombardia, Italy

Specimen Size: 17.5 x 15.8 x 4.3 cm (large cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 2.5 mm

How often does one encounter a LARGE CABINET display specimen of this classic material? This beautiful piece is filled with hundreds upon hundreds of brilliantly lustrous, sharp, yellow-green dodecahedra which are intergrown to form “finger”-like groups, almost resembling some form of aquatic plant life. The crystals are surrounded by fibrous off-white color Chrysotile/Asbestos on matrix. For the most part, the piece is essentially damage free. It is very difficult to obtain such large and SHOWY specimens from Sferlun, and Garnets in general simply are not found in seven inch display pieces! For the size, quality and flashiness, the piece is very fairly priced.

No. ANDIT4119 - $ 2000.00 (=~ CAN$ 2617.12)

Andradite (var: Demantoid)

Locality: Sferlun Asbestos Mine, Val Malenco, Sondrio, Lombardia, Italy

Specimen Size: 15.0 x 9.7 x 4.4 cm (large cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 3.5 mm

This dramatically eye-catching and aesthetic specimen hosts hundreds of rich olive-green colored clusters of sharp, lustrous, dodecahedral crystals of Demantoid sit atop a thin layer of fibrous off-white color Chrysotile/Asbestos on host rock matrix. A six-inch display specimen from Sferlun is certainly hard to come by, and the majority of the hundreds of crystals on this attractive specimen are damage free. The concentration of decent-sized crystals on this piece makes this a worthwhile cabinet sized piece of this classic material. Good green Garnet specimens are rarely seen in pieces this size, especially with so many crystals on the same specimen. ; private_notes
