Andradite (Demantoid and Topazolite) Garnets
New from Madagascar !

The green to blue-green variety of Andradite Garnet known as “Demantoid” derives its name from the similarity to the high brilliance of Diamond. Some of the most notable and renowned localities for “Demantoid” are the Jeffrey Quarry in Canada, the famous Val Malenco in Italy, the Tubussis farm in Namibia, and the Korkodinskoe deposit in Russia which is best known for producing the finest facet grade material in the world.

In 2009 some of the finest and most impressive Andradite (var: “Demantoid” and “Topazolite”) crystals were discovered completely by accident in a relatively small mangrove field at Antetezambato, which is on the far north-northwestern coast of Madagascar (on the western side of Ambaro Bay), about 350 km northeast of the major and historic town and port of Mahajanga. The collecting was done completely by hand by thousands of locals in hundreds of small vertical holes which flood daily when the high tide rushes in the evening. The collecting “window” is relatively short every day and the miners have to scramble to evacuate their respective digging holes before the impending tide reaches them.

The mineralogy at this deposit is fairly simplistic, and only a few species have been found (Andradite, Quartz and rarely seen Stilbite !) so far. Most of the Andradite crystals formed on a metamorphosed sedimentary rock (caused by intrustions of cross cutting lamprofiric dikes) which created seams or fractures in the rock, allowing room for the Andradites to crystallize. Many of the matrix for these specimens is actually microcrystallized Andradite, from a soft yellow-green color to nearly white.

The two predominant habits observed for the Andradite are dodecahedron and trapezohedron with a wide range of color from a rich amber brown shade to a golden-yellow color, to a yellow-green, a “chrome” green hue and some crystals even show a slight blue-green overtone! Some of the crystals are absolutely WATER-CLEAR, although they are typically in the 5-6 mm range.

I personally hand selected all of these specimens from my good friend and expert in the minerals of Madagascar, Dr. Federico Pezzotta, who was responsible facilitating the valuation and legal export of most of this material in person in Madagascar.

I am very proud to be offering a large selection of very fairly priced (some specimens we saw in Tucson were priced over $10,000), attractive display specimens, of this exciting new material. This is a great opportunity to obtain superb quality specimens while they are still fresh out of the ground. I am told that this locality may not produce any more specimens in the future, and these pieces would make a great addition to any collection.

Lastly, it must be noted that these crystals show a SHIFT IN COLOR depending upon the different kind of light under which they are viewed. Fluorescent lighting shows the best color typically, while halogen lights are not as flattering, and most incandescent lighting is usually in the middle. We have found that the best GREEN color is usually seen under compact fluorescent mercury-bearing bulbs.

No. ANDMAD3101 - $ 1500.00 (=~ € 1344.60)

Andradite (var: Demantoid) with STILBITE !

Locality: Antetezambato, near the town of Nosy Faly, Ambanja District, Diana Region, Antsiranana Province, Madagascar

Specimen Size: 6.3 x 5.0 x 4.1 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 1.3 cm

A large, pristine, modified dodecahedral/trapezohedral crystal of Demantoid with very sharp and smooth faces is accompanied by a few smaller modified crystals, all of which have beautiful internal gemmy yellow to green hues when backlit. The crystals are sitting on an unusual layered sedimentary matrix that does not looks nearly as metamorphosed as the rest of the pieces I have seen from this discovery. To top it off, the piece has a thin coverage of white bladed Stilbite (!) crystals, which is only seen a small percentage of specimens from this locality. I especially like the way the main Demantoid crystal is positioned on this specimen as the 4-fold symmetry is somewhat skewed and one can see the crystal from a unique angle!

Andradite (var: Demantoid)

Locality: Antetezambato, near the town of Nosy Faly, Ambanja District, Diana Region, Antsiranana Province, Madagascar

Specimen Size: 7.1 x 4.3 x 3.8 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 8 mm

Without question, this is one of the most sculputural and dramatic specimens I have seen from Antetezambato which features a wealth of amazingly rich green color, modified dodecahedral crystals on a matrix of micro crystallized pale yellow Andradite. The largest crystal on the specimen has beautiful form, and is VERY gemmy, which we have tried to illustrate in the photos. The piece displays very well vertically, and the crystals actually have a slight blue overtone, reminiscent of those I have seen from Namibia or Canada. An elegant and inimitable display specimen.

Specimen Size: 9.4 x 7.8 x 3.7 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 9 mm

One of the largest pieces that I have in the update featuring a pair of gemmy green modified dodecahedral crystals which are associated with several smaller, gemmy dodecahedral/trapezohedral crystals of excellent quality which are nestled into a metamorphosed sedimentary rock matrix. A hard to find "hand sized" display specimen of this exciting new material.

Andradite (var: Demantoid)

Locality: Antetezambato, near the town of Nosy Faly, Ambanja District, Diana Region, Antsiranana Province, Madagascar

Specimen Size: 8.7 x 4.7 x 2.7 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 1.0 cm

An attractive small cabinet sized specimen with several good sized, virtually WATER-CLEAR, golden to green dodecahedral crystals which are beautifully centered on the metamorphosed sedimentary rock matrix. The surprisingly bright/glassy luster, excellent smoothness of the crystal faces and the lovely internal color make this one of the most striking pieces in the update. Two minor blemishes on two of the crystals is all that is keeping this piece from being three times as much money. If you don't mind a little bit of roughness to the crystals, this is a great piece to add to your collection, as these are some of the largest GEM quality crystals I have seen from the locality.

Andradite (var: Topazolite)

Locality: Antetezambato, near the town of Nosy Faly, Ambanja District, Diana Region, Antsiranana Province, Madagascar

Specimen Size: 4.9 x 3.1 x 2.6 cm (miniature)
Largest Crystal: 1.0 cm

It's easy to see that this is irrefutably one of the best miniature Topazolite specimens I have seen from any worldwide locality, not just Antetezambato. Virtually every modified trapezohedral crystal is a beautiful golden-amber hue with phenonmenally glassy luster and sensational form which are sitting on a micro crystallized matrix of pale yellow-green Andradite. The "main" Topazolite crystal is so WATER-CLEAR and impressive, that I couldn't help but just hold it in my hands for several minutes to admire the quality. One of the best pieces of this specific variety I have seen.

Specimen Size: 5.1 x 4.4 x 3.8 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 1.5 cm

Several large, sharp, slightly modified dodecahedral crystals of Demantoid with unusual stepped growth lines on the crystal faces sit atop of a white to off-white color mound of metamorphosed sedimentary rock. Internally, the crystals are translucen with a deep yellow-green hue. The largest crystal has a somewhat skeletal or "hoppered" appearance, and is not damaged, but simply has an irregular growth. A very cool, full-sized miniature with some attractive crystals.

A densely packed group of olive-green Topazolite crystals, some of which are nearly 100% water-clear and grade into translucent in clarity. A large percentage of the modified dodecahedral/trapezohedral crystals have wonderfully bright, glassy luster, and are associated with pale yellow-cream color Andradites sitting on a thin matrix of metamorphosed sedimentary rock.

An gorgeous "cluster" of soft green color dodecahedral crystals of Demantoid sit along a "ridge" of metamorphosed sedimentary rock matrix. Amazingly enough, there are only two very small contacts on the specimen, and truly do not detract from the general appeal of this eye-catching miniature display specimen. The translucency along with the good luster of the crystals is better than most I have seen from Antetezambato.

Gloriously BRIGHT and WATER-CLEAR modified dodecahedral crystals of Demantoid are scattered on a beautifully contrasting white matrix of metamorphosed sedimentary rock creating one of the finest quality miniatures size specimens I have seen. Although the rich green color crystals are not especially large, most of them are like little green jewels, and are just stunning to view in person. It's like looking through little green pools as you can see directly through to the underlying matrix. A wondrous display specimen with some of the finest quality Demantoids you will see from any locality.

This attractive display specimen features a pair of principal dodecahedral crystals with wonderfully smooth faces, great internal gemminess and textbook form are isolated on a matrix of crystallized microscopic Andradites and metamorphosed sedimentary rock matrix. There is a minor scuff near the base of one of the crystals, but overall it is difficult to obtain large, isolated crystals such as this on matrix from Antetezambato.

Very good sized, glassy, sharp, lustrous, gemmy, fine green color dodecahedral crystals of Demantoid along with many smaller associated crystals sit on a contrasting white "mound" of metamorphosed sedimentary host rock. Some of the smaller crystals have an irregular "stepped" growth along with being covered by a small amount of matrix, but are not damaged. This piece hosts one of the largest individual crystals in the update, and is a very well balanced "toenail" sized display specimen.

A fine "cluster" of amber-brown, gemmy/translucent, lustrous, trapezohedral Topazolite crystals which have attractive striations on the glassy crystal faces. It seems that intergrown groups of larger Topazolite crystals such as this were not very common from this new find, and this robust miniature is a fine example of said material.

A most unusual and interesting specimen that crystallized around the host rock in somewhat of a "solution pipe" formation as it is in the shape of a "tube", and crystallized on al sides. The crystals range in clarity of nearly water-clear to almost opaque and have a selective deposition of an unknown substance which created an alternating appearance of highly lustrous and matte faces on the modified dodecahedral crystals. The color is ranges from beige-yellow Andradites to a true green Demantoids. Without a doubt, this piece must be viewed for 360 degrees to be fully appreciated, and it is the only piece of its kind that I have seen from this locality. There are some good sized crystals on this piece to boot! A cool small cabinet display specimen!

Andradite (var: Demantoid) (with a "clover"/"shamrock" shaped crystal group!)

Locality: Antetezambato, near the town of Nosy Faly, Ambanja District, Diana Region, Antsiranana Province, Madagascar

Specimen Size: 7.4 x 5.0 x 1.7 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 7 mm

First, I have to point out that there is a group of four intergrown crystals on this specimen that looks undeniably like a clover leaf or shamrock (!), and we did our best to illustrate this in the photos. The resemblance is uncanny! There are several beautiful, sharp, lustrous, GEM/gemmy, light green color, modified dodecahedral Demantoid crystals sit on a thin layer of metamorphosed sedimentary rock matrix. Virtually damage free, and very attractive from the standpoint of the fact that there are a few very eye-catching "clusters" spread throughout the display side of specimen.

Largest Crystal: 2.0 cm

A large, lustrous, modified dodecahedral crystal of Demantoid sits atop a mound of smaller, sharp, lustrous, translucent crystals. There is only a small amount of attached matrix on the reverse side of the piece, and upon close inspection, nearly all of the crystals are as complete as they can be. The soft green color of the crystals combined with the size of the big one (neary one inch!) make this a repsectable, full-sized thumbnail.

An excellent thumbnail sized specimen with about a half dozen sharp, lustrous, very gemmy, fine green color, modified dodecahedral crystals of Demantoid on a stark white contrasting matrix of metamorphosed sedimentary host rock. The crystals are beautifully arranged and nearly damage free, save a spot of the periphery where it detached from the matrix. A fine specimen for the size, quality and price.

A few "fanned-out", modified dodecahedral Demantoid crystals are strewn across the upper portion of this "boxbuster" thumbnail specimen. The impressive quality, gemminess, and luster of the crystals is hard to miss. Depending upon which light the piece is viewed under, the color ranges from a yellow-green to a bluish-green. A real beauty, that is loaded with crystals and color!

Several good sized, sharp, lustrous, gemmy green dodecahedra of Demantoid sit atop a good sized "mound" of white metamorphosed sedimentary rock. The crystals are very gemmy in areas, and the largest crystal is somewhat incomplete, hence the reduced price, so you definitely get a lot of bang for your buck with this one.

A lovely "mound" of excellent Demantoid crystals sitting beautifully in the middle of a piece matrix comprising metamorphosed sedimentary rock and micro Andradite crystals. The piece is in wonderful condition and has a great three-dimensional quality that is not often seen in pieces from this locality. Some of the Demantoid crystals are incredibly beautiful and WATER-CLEAR with a gorgeous internal yellow-green color. Another interesting aspect of this piece is the fact that there is a slight hollow cavity underneath the Demantoid crystals so they almost look as though they're "floating" above the matrix!

This thumbnail is as aesthetic as any piece regardless of size in the update. A group of slightly modified, glassy, blue-green dodechedral crystals of Demantoid flare out of the white matrix in various directions giving this piece a great three dimensional quality. There are some slight stepped faces on the crystals, but perhaps the most notable aspect is the fact that even though the crystals are indeed intergrown, they have sufficient spacing between them allowing for each individual crystals to be viewed from all sides. A beautiful and virtually damage free thumbnail with some rather gemmy crystals!

The reverse side of the specimen is somewhat cavernous, but not damaged, and I honestly can only see on tiny point of attachment, otherwise crystallized all the way around. A cool large thumbnail sized specimen with one predominant, sharp, lustrous, slightly irregular, gemmy, beautiful chrome green color, modified dodecahedron which is surrounded by several smaller modified dodecahedra of equal quality on a small amount of contrasting white metamorphosed host rock matrix. The largest crystal has a incomplete growth on one corner, obviously due to the fact that it ran into a small amount of matrix which prevented it from fully terminating. Otherwise, the piece is in great shape, and the crystals are very gemmy up close, which simply cannot be duplicated by a camera.
