Gold

Locality: Eagle's Nest Mine (Mystery Wind Mine), Placer County, California

Specimen Size: 4.1 x 2.0 x 1.7 cm (miniature)

A SUPERB example of crystallized Gold, regardless of size or locality. This stunning miniature shows remarkably sharp and distinct crystals with notably high splendent luster and beautiful form. The piece has an elegant flowing appearance, while still retaining a simple geometric beauty. The crystals are mostly modified octahedra and dodecahedra, but the shapes they create are unique and eye-catching. I can see distinct flattened octahedral which have formed lovely “arrowhead”-shaped or “spear tip”-shaped crystal, along with semi-skeletal compresses dodecahedra with their internal repeating line patterns, plus small but distinct textbook unmodified crystals near the base. To top it off, the Gold is gently wrapped around a TERMINATED Quartz crystal with sharp lustrous faces and even a bit of gemminess. Overall, the aesthetic balance along with the fact that the quality of the crystals are among the highest calibre, make this a very worthwhile and noteworthy specimen of Gold from this prolific specimen producer.

Gold

Locality: Eagle's Nest Mine (Mystery Wind Mine), Placer County, California

Specimen Size: 4.9 x 2.2 x 2.1 cm (miniature)

A fantastic miniature sized matrix display specimen of high quality crystallized Gold from California. This piece originally belonged to my father, Richard Kosnar, and was actually given to him as a birthday present from my mother in 1981. Back then this was a really fine matrix specimen, and it has truly held up well against many other that have been found since. It features several free standing, branching groups of well-crystallized Gold aesthetically flaring out of Quartz matrix. The fact that each section of Gold has a pleasing separation of Quartz makes for a very appealing effect which really catches the eye. The piece displays beautifully as you can see and when you look closely you can see a myriad of complex and stunning crystal habits. Perhaps the crystals that are most noteworthy and the narrow / elongated compressed octahedral which have formed gorgeous “spear tip”-shaped crystals that are surrounded by thin elongated octahedral that almost have an arborescent appearance, like ferns leaves. One of the groups on the side has a gorgeous “fan”-shaped array of small repeating octahedral crystals creating a unique crystallization. Every millimeter of Gold is crystallized and when you view them with a loupe, it’s remarkably how diversified the crystallization is in a relatively small area. To top it off, the piece has a strong “gold” color, with a notably aurulent hue, which really helps it stand out from the Quartz. Additionally, the luster of the crystals is certainly above average for the species. No repairs or restorations, just a really fine quality display specimen of classic California Gold.

Gold

Locality: Jamestown District, Mother Lode Belt, Tuolumne County, California

Specimen Size: 4.2 x 3.3 x 2.1 cm (miniature)

A wonderful example of the classic flowing “ribbons” of Gold from the famous Jamestown District in the Mother Lode area of California. These pieces are among the most beautiful of all Gold specimens in my mind, and this piece is no exception. This one actually stands out from others I’ve seen with this style because it’s not just a flat ribbon / leaf, but rather a fairly dramatic THREE-DIMENSIONAL display specimen with great character and overall aesthetic quality. This form is 100% natural, exactly the way it was found, most likely it was created as a seam-filling in the host rock. The folded yet stalwart form of the piece along with its bright shiny metallic quality give it an other-worldly appearance. Additionally, one can see minute crystallization along the edges of the ribbons / leaves. It displays beautifully without the aid of a base or clay. Gorgeous material, and very rare to see in Gold in general, especially in this size and quality. From the personal collection of Richard Kosnar.

Gold

Locality: Grass Valley, Nevada City District (Grass Valley District), Nevada County, California

Specimen Size: 4.0 x 2.2 x 1.6 cm (miniature)

A really attractive piece of “spongy” crystalline / crystallized Gold in Quartz from the famous Grass Valley District in California. I don’t know for certain if this piece is from the 16 to 1 mine, so I’m leaving it simply at Grass Valley. This is older material from the early 1980s, and features bright metallic showy veinlets of attractive native Gold mixed in Quartz matrix with minor sulfides (Sphalerite or Tetrahedrite?) or possibly Hessite. The piece displays very well and shows Gold on all sides. It has a bit of heft to it as well, so you know there’s more Gold than what you can see on the surface. The close up photos so small but notable modified semi-hoppered octahedral crystals, which gives the piece more value as opposed to “massive” uncrystallized Gold.

Gold

Locality: Grass Valley, Nevada City District (Grass Valley District), Nevada County, California

Specimen Size: 3.1 x 2.7 x 1.5 cm (thumbnail)

What an aesthetic and eye-catching full sized Gold thumbnail from California. This is a really attractive piece of showy crystallized Gold from the famous Grass Valley District in California. I don’t know for certain if this piece is from the 16 to 1 mine, so I’m leaving it simply at Grass Valley. This is older material from the early 1980s, and features bright metallic showy “arms” or “branches” of attractive native Gold with minor sulfides (Sphalerite or Tetrahedrite?) or possibly Hessite. The piece displays very well and shows Gold on all sides. You can clearly see crystallization on all sides, and just look at how beautifully this piece sits without the aid of a stand or clay. For the quality and overall displayability, this piece is very fairly priced compared to other comparable pieces I’ve seen on the market recently.

Gold

Locality: Eagle's Nest Mine (Mystery Wind Mine), Placer County, California

Specimen Size: 3.7 x 1.6 x 1.3 cm (miniature)

This remarkably showy and aesthetic piece of matrix Gold from the famous Eagle’s nest mine features a very attractive “flag” or “sail” of incredibly bright splendent metallic Gold on a small pedestal of Quartz matrix creating not only a dramatic little display specimen, but high quality to boot. The main part of the Gold comprises a good sized flattened octahedron, but there are at least a couple dozen accessory crystals with the similar triangular compressed habit. The aesthetics combined with the high quality leave nothing to be desired in this beautiful California Gold specimen.

Gold

Locality: Eagle's Nest Mine (Mystery Wind Mine), Placer County, California

Specimen Size: 2.8 x 2.6 x 0.2 cm (thumbnail)

A showy and aesthetic thumbnail sized specimen of very arborescent native Gold in the form of a “shrub” or “bush”. The piece is notably flat which gives it a beautiful dual-sided display with excellent crystallization around the peripheral edges on the upper portion of the “branches” of the piece. The color is a rich golden-yellow hue and the luster is certainly above average in my mind. This is definitely a worthwhile thumbnail specimen with good form and visceral appeal that won’t break the bank.

Gold

Locality: Eagle's Nest Mine (Mystery Wind Mine), Placer County, California

Specimen Size: 5.3 x 2.9 x 0.8 cm (small cabinet)

A lovely small cabinet / large miniature crystallized specimen of California Gold from the famous Eagle’s Nest Mine. This piece is not only a “floater” as it is completely crystallized all the way around, but it has a fantastic sculptural appearance with small nooks and crannies of diversified crystallization all over. The piece is highlighted by stunning semi-hopped 0.7 cm compressed dodecahedron of Gold with high luster and brilliant buttery-yellow color. Under the microscope I found habits ranging from flatted “spear tip”-shaped octahedrons to dodecahedrons along with one tiny but distinct trapezohedron with dodecahedral and octahedral modifications. The photos don’t show the high reflective quality of the specimen, but it’s really eye-catching in person. A great display piece of crystallized Gold that can be appreciated under high magnification as equally if one were to view it in a display case.

Gold

Locality: Eagle's Nest Mine (Mystery Wind Mine), Placer County, California

Specimen Size: 3.6 x 1.3 x 0.2 cm (miniature)

What a gorgeous combination of arborescent and crystallized Gold in this aesthetic miniature display specimen. The piece is crystallized on every square millimeter with a stunning “feather”-like array of sharp, distinct, “spear tip”-esque flattened octahedra and compressed dodecahedra of native Gold with good luster. It’s more of a two-dimensional piece, but leaves nothing to be desired in the way of crystallization, as both sides are loaded with fine quality and eye-catchingly distinctive crystals that can be appreciated both with a loupe and the naked eye.

Gold

Locality: Eagle's Nest Mine (Mystery Wind Mine), Placer County, California

Specimen Size: 7.1 x 5.3 x 0.8 cm (small cabinet)

A wonderful showy small cabinet specimen of native Gold from the famous Eagle's Nest Mine in California. The combination of fine minute crystallization along with an isolated WIRE of Gold on the same specimen is a real treat. Upon close inspection there is a plethora of crystal habits to be seen ranging from compressed but sharp dodecahedra to thin elongated octahedral with cubic modifications and even some tetrahexahedral faces along with some distinct but small trapezohedral faces. The piece is crystallized all the way around, even the little wire has a noticeable crystal on it! For the size, quality and aesthetics, this is a striking Gold specimen that really has a lot to offer. The color is a very alluring and desirable rich yellow golden hue and it’s exactly what one would expect in a crystallized specimen from this historic specimen producing locality.
