Gold

Locality: Little Johnnie Mine (Ibex Mine), Leadville, Lake County, Colorado

Specimen Size: 0.9 x 0.6 x 0.3 cm (thumbnail)

Gold specimens from Leadville are not common on the market, and typically are snatched up immediately by collectors when they are made available. Recently, a local digger discovered a small amount of crystallized Gold specimens on the dumps of the Little Johnnie Mine, and this piece is one of said specimens. The piece features beautiful branching crystallized "leaves" and somewhat "wire"-like growths of Gold creating a beautiful thumbnail specimen. I have photographed the Gold under the microscope to better show the detail. A cool little Gold specimen from this historic and classic Colorado locality.

Gold (matched set)

Locality: Idarado Mine, Telluride, Ouray District (Uncompahgre District), San Miguel County, Colorado

Specimen Size: 4.1 x 2.1 x 2.0 cm AND 4.1 x 1.4 x 1.3 (miniature)

I am incredibly proud of the fact that two generations of my family worked in the Idarado Mine. Gold specimens from this locality are few and far between on the market, certainly much less common than those from other noted San Juan localities such as the Sunnyside or Camp Bird Mines. This matched set of polished specimens features corresponding streaks of bright metallic native Gold that were obviously separated by a saw blade. They make for a cool pair of “bookends”, and how often does one encounter such an interesting example of Gold from this world famous locality?

Gold with Sphalerite in Quartz

Locality: Idarado Mine, Telluride, Ouray District (Uncompahgre District), San Miguel County, Colorado

Specimen Size: 4.0 x 2.9 x 2.3 cm (miniature)

I am incredibly proud of the fact that two generations of my family worked in the Idarado Mine. Gold specimens from this locality are few and far between on the market, certainly much less common than those from other noted San Juan localities such as the Sunnyside or Camp Bird Mines. This specimen is a mix of Sphalerite and Quartz with minor speckled Gold on one side (illustrated with the blue paper arrow). A good example of the ore from the well-known Idarado Mine. How often does one encounter an example of Gold in matrix from this world famous locality?

Gold with Hessite, Chalcopyrite, Bornite, Calaverite, etc.

Locality: 2040 Stope, D Level, La Belle Creole Vein, (80 feet below Lake Emma!), Sunnyside Mine, near Gladstone, Eureka District, San Juan County, Colorado

Specimen Size: 2.3 x 2.3 x 1.6 cm (thumbnail)

This specimen was mined in 1971 by Ed Melka and is directly out of my parents’ personal collection (# G/Te’S1078S). It features beautiful, very sharp, well-formed crystals of Native Gold which are associated with a plethora of species including the obvious Quartz, Galena and Chalcopyrite, and even a bit of iridescent Bornite, but upon close inspection, one can see there are seldom occurring telluride species, including Hessite and Calaverite and possibly Petzite. The Gold is the star on this one as the crystals are remarkably sharp and very attractive under magnification. If you’re in the market for a thumbnail sized association specimen from a very specific part of the Sunnyside Mine, do not miss out on this one. Keep in mind that the 2040 stope on the D Level of the Sunnyside Mine was less than 30 yards away from the bottom of Lake Emma, which on June 4, 1978 completely collapsed into the Sunnyside Mine, ejecting millions of gallons of water from the base of the mountain at the opening of the mine and eviscerated the entire mine from top to bottom. This disaster, amazingly, happened on a Sunday, when no miners were working at the Sunnyside, so there were no casualties, but the damage and the falling metals market ultimately led to the closure of the Sunnyside.

Gold with Pyroxmangite and sulfides plus Quartz

Locality: 2130 Stope, G Level, La Belle Creole Vein, Sunnyside Mine, near Gladstone, Eureka District, San Juan County, Colorado

Specimen Size: 4.7 x 3.7 x 0.4 cm (miniature)

This slabbed specimen is one of the few of its kind that I have seen from this mine. It features patches of "Cloud Gold" which is a speckling of small "dust"-like areas of Gold which are intergrown with white Quartz and associated with Galena, Sphalerite and Chalcopyrite, but the most INTERESTING aspect of this specimen is the fact that it features pink bands of the rare Manganese Silicate, Pyroxmangite! This association of Gold with Pyroxmangite is very rare, and possibly unique to the Sunnyside mine. This specimen was mined in 1966, and comes from the Colorado Gold collection of my father, Richard A. Kosnar.

This matched set of sawn specimens features corresponding spots of bright metallic “Cloud Gold” that are mixed in deep green to black Sphalerite and white Quartz matrix. They make for a cool pair of “bookends”.

Gold with Sphalerite, Galena, Chalcopyrite and Scheelite in Quartz

Locality: 5 Level, King Ore Shoot, Camp Bird Mine, above Ouray, Ouray County, Colorado

Specimen Size: 20.0 x 7.8 x 4.4 cm (large cabinet)

ex.  Robert Stoufer

A LARGE cabinet display specimen that is essentially a big polished slab of the actual ORE itself from the world famous Camp Bird Mine above Ouray. The Camp Bird, amazingly, produced approximately 1.5 million troy ounces of Gold, and 4 million troy ounces of Silver, from 1896 to 1990, and it’s easy to see why when you take a look at this big slab of ore directly out of the illustrious King Ore Shoot! You can see all of the bright metallic Gold that is wedged between the metallic and deep black sulfides, i.e., Sphalerite and Galena, along with the bright yellow Chalcopyrite plus the notable grey-brown Scheelite in Quartz matrix. The Scheelite is the key sign that this piece is from the Camp Bird Mine and actually fluoresces a bright blue-white color under SW ultra violet light (see last photo). If you want a significant and noticeable display specimen of Gold ore from one of the most important metal producers in the history of the United States for a great price, do not miss out on this excellent display specimen. I cannot replace this piece for equal value on the market today!

Specimen Size: 12.1 x 9.3 x 5.3 cm (cabinet)

A hard to find Gold / Telluride association specimen from a lesser known locality in Colorado. This piece features Gold associated with grey-silver Coloradoite plus grey Hessite and silvery Sylvanite on/in off-white color Quartz matrix. This is one of the few pieces of this material that I've had to offer, and it would certainly make a great addition to any Gold suite, or a collection of telluride minerals. The piece was mined in 2009, presumably off the dumps of the mine.

Gold with Coloradoite, Hessite and Sylvanite in Quartz

Locality: Bessie G Mine, La Plata District (California District), La Plata County, Colorado

Specimen Size: 4.1 x 2.4 x 1.2 cm (miniature)

A hard to find Gold / Telluride association specimen from a lesser known locality in Colorado. This piece features Gold associated with grey-silver Coloradoite plus grey Hessite and silvery Sylvanite on/in off-white color Quartz matrix. This is one of the few pieces of this material that I've had to offer, and it would certainly make a great addition to any Gold suite, or a collection of telluride minerals. The piece was mined in 2009, presumably off the dumps of the mine.
