Brookite from Kharan, Baluchistan, Pakistan

In the early 2000s, the Kharan District in Pakistan started producing some of the finest "Alpine-type" Brookite specimens ever seen.  We have been selecting individual specimens over the last few years to put together an update of these impressive Brookites.  These pieces are remarkably similar to the classic true Alpine Brookites from Italy and Austria, and in many ways have surpassed their European counterparts in terms of size and quality.  Most Brookites from the Alps are only a few millimeters in length, but there are many pieces in this update with crystals approaching 2 cm, and one crystal over 3 cm!  The superb luster and form of the crystals combined with their deep flame red hues and classic black "phantoms" make them incredibly desirable to collectors as specimens of this caliber truly have never been offered on the market like this.

Largest Crystal: 1.9 cm

A beautiful full miniature display specimen featuring a predominant, big bladed "sword"-shaped crystal of Brookite measuring 1.9 cm aesthetically flaring off the underlying matrix. The crystal, along with the accompanying smaller Brookites shows a deep flame red color when backlit along with classic desirable internal black "phantoms". On the front right edge of the specimen there is a small group of colorless gemmy Quartz crystals that appear to have formed in a "Faden" growth. No damage, highly displayable and fine quality all around. A top miniature of this now classic "Alpine-type" material.

Brookite on Quartz

Locality: Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Specimen Size: 12.1 x 7.2 x 2.6 cm (cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 1.8 cm

This is a beautiful cabinet sized display specimen of this fine quality, desirable "Alpine-type" material from Pakistan. The main focal point of the piece is the 1.8 cm crystal group with sharp, lustrous, striated faces along the prism and a gorgeous reddish-orange hue with classic internal black "phantoms" that are best seen with backlighting. The crystallized Quartz surrounding the Brookites is rarely seen from this area, and makes for such a lovely and eye-catching overall piece. Some of the Quartz crystals are completely colorless and transparent while others features moss green inclusions of Clinochlore ("Chlorite") to create a wonderful contrast with the Brookites. The piece is in superb condition as the Brookites are undamaged and virtually every Quartz crystal is completely terminated.

Locality: Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Specimen Size: 2.8 x 1.9 x 1.7 cm (thumbnail)
Largest Crystal: 1.3 cm

A gorgeous, three-dimensional and fine quality thumbnail specimen from the Kharan District of Pakistan featuring a couple brilliant orange colored "sword"-shaped crystals of Brookite measuring up to 1.3 cm aesthetically perched atop white Quartz crystal matrix. The Brookites are undamaged and superb quality for the species. The crystals glow with color when backlit and show thin black internal "phantoms". It's incredibly difficult to find such showy, undamaged Brookite thumbnails like this from any locality, and this piece would make a fine addition to any thumbnail collection or a suite of Pakistani minerals or worldwide metamorphic minerals.

Here we have a nice thumbnail display specimen featuring a cluster of thin, bladed, sharp, lustrous Brookite crystals with squared-off terminations sitting beautifully on Quartz matrix. The crystals measure up to 1.6 cm long. Internally, the color of the Brookites is a deep orange-red (best seen with backlighting) which contrasts wonderfully with the black "phantoms". There is a little bit of roughness here and there, but the piece is still showy and good quality.

Brookite with Quartz ("floater" specimen)

Locality: Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Specimen Size: 1.7 x 1.2 x 1.1 cm (thumbnail)
Largest Crystal: 1.2 cm

An aesthetic thumbnail specimen of these gorgeous Pakistani Brookites featuring a pair of very sharp, lustrous, thin bladed crystals with a rich fiery golden-orange hue associated with WATER CLEAR Quartz crystals free of matrix. The largest Brookite measures 1.2 cm long. The piece was difficult to photograph, but all of the Brookite crystals are actually doubly-terminated and as far as I can tell the piece seems to be crystallized all the way around, so I'm calling it a complete "floater". I love the patterning of the black "phantoms" inside the Brookite crystals, which gives the piece great character.

A very aesthetic thumbnail specimen from Pakistan featuring a pair of sharp, "sword"-shaped crystals with a glowing golden-orange hue and thin black internal "phantoms" which are growing at nearly a 90 degree angle off of a single, sharp, lustrous, gemmy, colorless prismatic hexagonal Quartz crystal with minor green Clinochlore "Chlorite" inclusions at the base. The Brookites measure up to 1.1 cm long and are completely undamaged. What an eye-catching and fine quality specimen of this now classic material.

Brookite with "Faden" Quartz

Locality: Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Specimen Size: 3.7 x 2.7 x 2.3 cm (miniature)
Largest Crystal: 1.0 cm

A beautiful group of thin bladed fiery auburn colored Brookite crytals - with the largest measuring 1.0 cm - aesthetically flaring off sharp, lustrous, colorless Quartz crystal matrix. The Brookites are fine quality, undamaged and show gorgeous black "phantoms" which have formed attractive repeating patterns giving the piece a "tiger-stripe"-esque appearance. The most desirable combination / association from this area is to find Brookite on Quartz, but this piece is even more enticing as the some of the Quartz crystals have formed a "Faden" (German word for string) growth. Lastly, the left side of the specimen features a bit of moss green colored Clinochlore "Chlorite" inclusions creating a lovely contrast of colors. Great quality all around and so showy.

Locality: Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Specimen Size: 2.7 x 2.5 x 1.3 cm (thumbnail)
Largest Crystal: 8 mm

A beautiful group of sharp, lustrous, gemmy, rich orange-red color "sword"-shaped Brookite crystals measuring up to 8 mm with sharp, lustrous Quartz crystals on a thin layer of matrix. The Brookites are a bit thicker than most crystals this size, which contributes to their rich color. I love how the black "phantoms" in the crystals run in thin vertical lines to create beautiful symmetry in the Brookites. No damage and very attractive in terms of a display quality thumbnail.

A striking isolated, somewhat broad "sword"-shaped crystal of Brookite measuring 1.1 cm sitting nicely on the underlying host rock matrix. The Brookite shows a deep golden-orange hue when backlit, with a thin internal black "phantom" running from the point of the termination to the base of the crystal. There are a couple prismatic colorless Quartz crystal on each side of the Brookite, framing the piece nicely. No damage and incredibly eye-catching.

Brookite

Locality: Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Specimen Size: 3.1 x 2.3 x 1.7 cm (thumbnail)
Largest Crystal: 1.3 cm

A dramatic thumbnail specimen, featuring a stunning 1.3 cm long Brookite crystal group with a notably unusual modified termination sitting aesthetically on a small group of colorless, sharp, lustrous Quartz crystals on matrix. The Brookite is actually a composite group of a few intergrown crystals, but it has created one of the more bizarre crystals in terms of morphology that I've seen from any world locality. The color is a rich reddish-orange hue with a thick black "phantom" running the length of the Brookites. The Brookite is doubly-terminated, and in superb condition, though I can see a tiny bit of roughness along the upper right edge. You just don't see Brookite crystals so beautifully exposed like this as the only point of the attachment is a thin bit on the corner where it grew from the underlying Quartz. A spectacular large thumbnail / toenail sized piece that leaves nothing to be desired in terms of quality or aesthetics.

Sharp, lustrous, gemmy, thin blades of Brookites with a rich flame red hue sitting among scattered Quartz crystals on matrix. The Brookites measure up to 7 mm long and are notably free-standing (not lying flat) on the matrix. The main group is undamaged, though there are a few tiny Brookites here and there that are not completely terminated. A good quality, affordable small cabinet specimen of these lovely Brookites from Pakistan.

Brookite with Quartz

Locality: Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Specimen Size: 6.2 x 5.7 x 1.3 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 1.0 cm

This is a wonderful small cabinet display specimen of Brookite with Quartz from Pakistan featuring a group of sharp, thin, lustrous blades measuring up to 1.0 cm long free-standing on a thin plate of host rock matrix with several associated GEM quality, colorless Quartz crystals. The color of the Brookites is a glowing golden-orange, but my favorite aspect of them is the repeating "fan"-like pattern created by the internal black "phantoms". Great quality all around, and while the main Brookites are undamaged, there are a few partial blades of Brookite on the piece which are not fully terminated. It's still a very showy specimen of this classic material, and the effect of the "phantoms" is rarely seen in Brookite in my experience.

The crystal itself has a bit of roughness along the prism, but it's still good quality with a beautiful orange color and contrasting black "phantoms" when backlit. This is about as showy and aesthetic as it gets for Brookite! A stunning group of very sharp, lustrous, gemmy, rich red-orange colored, doubly-terminated "sword"-shaped crystals dramatically set atop transparent, colorless Quartz crystals on matrix. The thin black internal "phantoms" flowing through the Brookites makes for a fantastic accent to these remarkable crystals. Brookite with Anatase

Locality: Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Specimen Size: 4.5 x 3.8 x 2.3 cm (miniature)
Largest Crystal: 9 mm

Even though Brookite and Anatase are polymorphs, they are rarely found in nature together. As a matter of fact, compared to Rutile and Anatase, Brookite is considerably rarer. This piece is the only specimen to feature Brookite and Anatase together. Out of the hundreds of pieces I've seen from this area, it's incredibly difficult to find any specimens with both species together. A sharp, gemmy, lustrous, flame red colored 9 mm crystal of Brookite is associated with dipyramidal crystals of Anatase which show a honey-gold color when backlit. No damage, and the association makes it a very desirable specimen of this rare combo.

Brookite

Locality: Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Specimen Size: 7.7 x 4.9 x 3.2 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Crystal: 3.2 cm

This aesthetic specimen features the largest individual crystal of Brookite on any piece in the update, measuring a full 3.2 cm long! These crystals are very sharp, lustrous and well-formed with classic "sword"-shaped pyramidal terminations. You can see a bit of a golden hue on the edges when the crystals are backlit, but they are mostly opaque. If the crystals were completely transparent, the price would be considerably higher. With that said, the piece is very fairly priced for anybody who wants a small cabinet sized display specimen with BIG crystals aesthetically sitting on matrix.

This is a wonderful thumbnail specimen featuring a striking doubly-terminated 7 mm crystal of Brookite that is gracefully set among sharp, gemmy, white / colorless prismatic Quartz crystals. It's incredibly rare to find a doubly-terminated Brookite crystal on matrix like this. This crystal has the good fortune of nearly lying flat when it formed, so both ends had room to finish growing. As you can see, the glowing reddish-umber color of the crystal looks beautiful (even without backlighting) and the classic desirable internal black "phantom" makes for a great touch. No damage to the Brookite and just beautiful in person.

No damage and very attractive in person.

Brookite with Quartz

Locality: Kharan District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Specimen Size: 11.8 x 9.0 x 4.6 cm (cabinet)
Largest crystal: 1.7 cm

This is a superb cabinet specimen of this now classic material from the Kharan District in Pakistan. There are three aspects to this specimen that make it stand out from so many others on the market. First of all, the majority of the Brookite crystals are free-standing, which is remarkable for the species, as most Brookites are found lying flat on matrix. Secondly, the specimen has excellent isolation and spacing between the Brookites giving the viewer several spots on the piece to enjoy the crystals. Lastly, the accompanying Quartz crystals are nearly equal-sized to the Brookites and just as evenly spread out, so the piece has wonderful balance. The Brookites on this specimen show some of the richest red hues of any piece in the lot, and when backlit, you can see that they feature very eye-catching internal black "phantoms" creating some of the most picturesque patterns. Virtually every Brookite crystal is undamaged, and the fact that they are big (for the species) makes this piece all the more enticing. Many of the Quartz crystals are GEM quality and create a wonderful contrast against the fiery Brookite blades. A fantastic display piece of Brookite from this remarkable locality.
