New Find of Fluorescent Hyalite Opal (Opal-AN) From Mexico !

At the beginning of 2016 a friend of ours started working a claim with a few of the locals in the state of San Luis Potosi for this fine quality Hyalite Opal.  It's very exciting to see specimens of this calibre coming out of the ground, as most of the Opal from this area is not nearly as attractive or fine quality as the pieces in this lot.  I apologize for not having a more specific locality, but our friend doesn't want to divulge the information yet as he is trying to keep it under wraps until he feels that he was able to collect everything.

Our friend dubbed some of the colored material “blood vessel” Opal due to the interesting red/orange “capillary”-esque lines that can be seen in many of the specimens.  Essentially the Opals themselves are colorless, but minute inclusions of what I’m assuming is iron oxide have created not only beautiful internal color, but the thin “blood vessel” patterns.

Like most Hyalite specimens, these new pieces from Mexico show a brilliant glowing green fluorescence under SW UV light.

Finally, for years this material was referred to as "Hyalite" Opal, but is now listed as a variety of Opal called Opal-AN.   It is now defined specifically as an amorphous (often colorless) form of Opal that is found in spherical aggregates, which are often intergrown or stacked with a "bead"-like appearance.  For reference, mindat.org states that: "The "A" in the name stands for amorphous; the subscript "N" is to imply its structure is network-like similar to silica glass; however, it still contains about 3-8% water".

Opal (variety: “Opal-AN”) (variety: “Hyalite Opal”) (“Blood Vessel Opal”)

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 5.6 x 3.2 x 2.6 cm (small cabinet)

Based upon our experience, it’s difficult to find good quality matrix specimens of this material. This piece is arguably the best matrix specimen in the update. It features glassy, nearly WATER-CLEAR, colorless spherical groups or "balls" of Hyalite aesthetically stacked up and sitting on matrix. One of the close up photos, gives the appearance of “soap bubbles”. A soft orange hue can be seen from minute inclusions of iron oxide, giving it the “blood vessel” appearance from which this material gets its name. The piece is not only aesthetic, but good quality for Hyalite from anywhere in the world. It can be displayed from nearly every angle 360 degrees around, and has only slight damage. Showy, unique and good quality for North American Hyalite.

Opal (variety: “Opal-AN”) (variety: “Hyalite Opal”) (“Blood Vessel Opal”)

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 4.6 x 4.1 x 2.6 cm (miniature)

A lovely glass bead like group of spherical, gemmy, lustrous, colorless Hyalite Opal (“Blood Vessel Opal”) which are included with small amounts of iron oxide to create the thin reddish-orange “blood vessel”-like lines that not only give the piece color, but character as well. The front/display side of the specimen is in good shape, and there’s even a bit of attached matrix on the back, which is not common for this material. Only minor rough spots here and there, and very worthwhile for the material, better than most we’ve seen.

Opal (variety: “Opal-AN”) (variety: “Hyalite Opal”) (“Blood Vessel Opal”)

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 3.3 x 3.2 x 2.4 cm (miniature)

A VERY gemmy, glowing orange color, lustrous, globular group of “Blood Vessel Opal” / Hyalite Opal featuring dozens of intergrown spheres which get their color from tiny inclusions of iron oxide. The side of the specimen shows the thin “capillary”-esque lines that give it such a unique appearance. Up close, there’s a lot going on, including a dark “frog eye” effect on a few of the spheres, plus One typically does not see Hyalite Opal of this quality and color on the market. Only a tiy bit of damage, and attractive to be sure.

Opal (variety: “Opal-AN”) (variety: “Hyalite Opal”) (“Blood Vessel Opal”)

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 9.0 x 5.1 x 3.9 cm (small cabinet)

A rarely seen matrix specimen of Hyalite from San Luis Potosi, Mexico featuring bead-like gemmy, colorless spheres which are included with a small amount of orange iron oxide to give it the “blood vessel”-like inclusions, hence the nickname “Blood Vessel Opal”. Interestingly enough, the piece has a dual texture effect where some of the globules are perfectly smooth, while others have an “alligator skin” appearance on the surface. One can spend a great deal of time looking at this piece with a loupe! The top portion of the piece is contacted, but this is nearly a cabinet sized piece of this material. The specimen has a three-dimensional flowing appearance as the Opal formed little ridges here and there, giving it a lot of character. Very attractive and just plan different from most of the specimens in this update.

Opal (variety: “Opal-AN”) (variety: “Hyalite Opal”)

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 7.2 x 5.1 x 2.1 cm (small cabinet)

Brilliant “glass”-like beads of gemmy to TRANSPARENT, lustrous Hyalite Opal intergrown to form a very eye-catching and fine quality group aesthetically sitting on matrix. Matrix specimens of this material are not common, let alone fine quality, gemmy, aesthetic groups on matrix. I didn’t label this piece as being one of the “Blood Vessel Opals” as it’s mostly colorless and doesn’t really have much for inclusions like the majority of the pieces in this update. Very little damage and highly displayable. One of my favorites in the update, and a worthwhile pickup for anybody interested in the material.

A gemmy thumbnail sized specimen of soft orange color “Blood Vessel Opal” with good quality glassy “bead”-like globules free of matrix. A bit of rough edges here and there keeps it from being perfect, hence the reduced price. There is also a bit of secondary white opaque Opal overgrowth, which gives it character, but do not mistake it for damage or being dirty.

Opal (variety: “Opal-AN”) (variety: “Hyalite Opal”)

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 2.0 x 1.5 x 1.3 cm (thumbnail)

Beautiful spherical Hyalite Opal with excellent internal gemminess and wonderful overall form make for a great thumbnail specimen of this attractive newly mined material. For a smaller specimen, there’s a great deal of color to be seen ranging from yellow-saffron to deep butterscotch-orange to more of a brighter golden hue. This piece gets its color from iron oxide inclusions, but it doesn’t have the same “capillary”-like inclusions that many others have. It’s still very pretty, and a worthwhile specimen, not only for this locality, but from anywhere.

Opal (variety: “Opal-AN”) (variety: “Hyalite Opal”) (“Blood Vessel Opal”)

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 3.2 x 2.1 x 1.2 cm (miniature)

A large thumbnail / toenail sized specimen of spherical “bead”-like Hyalite Opal with strong orange coloring caused by inclusions of iron oxide. This piece might be the closest to RED that we’ve seen in this material, interestingly there are areas where the deep reddish color is side by side with nearly colorless Hyalite. The material has been nicknamed “Blood Vessel Opal” due to the thin lines created by the inclusions near the surface of the spheres. The surface of some of the “spheres” have interesting white “rings” that have formed from volcanic activity. The reverse side of the specimen has a bit of white precious Opal near the center for an interesting contrast.

Opal (variety: “Opal-AN”) (variety: “Hyalite Opal”) (“Blood Vessel Opal”)

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 3.6 x 3.3 x 1.5 cm (miniature)

Wow, I was impressed when I saw this piece as the sheer aesthetics are almost unheard of for the material. Typically it’s impossible for these Hyalites to form in such a pleasing three-dimensional shape, but this piece breaks the mold. Not only is it incredibly showy, but it has a wide range of colors starting with a fiery orange-red hue on one end which grades across the specimen into nearly colorless / pale golden color and is actually opaque WHITE at the base. The gemmier portions of the piece have great luster and that classic “glass-bead” like appearance that is well known in Hyalite. For an added touch, there’s even a contrast of textures on the piece, where some of the globules are smooth and glassy, while other have a coarse surface. Lastly, the richer colored areas are a textbook example of the “Blood Vessel Opal” from this locality where the iron oxide inclusions have formed thin lines near the surface to give it an almost organic appearance. Very good quality and highly displayable. Only a little damage mostly on the back / sides of the piece.

A beautiful stacked / curled group of glassy tightly intergrown “beads” of gemmy brilliant orange color “Blood Vessel Opal” from this newly discovered locality. A wonderful thumbnail with excellent form and color. The strong orange hue is caused by inclusions of iron oxide, which have left small lines near the surface, creating the “capillaries” or “blood vessels” from which this material gets its nickname.

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 3.1 x 2.1 x 1.1 cm (thumbnail)

A thumbnail sized specimen of spherical “bead”-like Hyalite Opal with strong orange coloring caused by inclusions of iron oxide. The material has been nicknamed “Blood Vessel Opal” due to the thin lines created by the inclusions near the surface of the spheres. Though lustrous and gemmy, the piece does have a bit of damage on both sides, hence the reduced price.

Opal (variety: “Opal-AN”) (variety: “Hyalite Opal”) (“Blood Vessel Opal”)

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 2.3 x 2.0 x 1.4 cm (thumbnail)

What a lovely thumbnail specimen of this beautiful newly discovered material This piece has a lot going for it. First off, the unique and dramatic formation of the Opal itself would be noteworthy if nothing else. The flowing, almost twirling “ridge” of tightly packed glass-like “beads” of Hyalite can be seen on all sides of the piece, and because of the almost organic nature of its shape, the piece can easily be displayed from a few angles. Secondly, the color is fantastic for a smaller specimen as it shows the distinctive “Blood Vessel Opal” appearance with strong red-orange inclusions of iron oxide which have manifested in thin “capillary”-esque lines near the surface of the Opal. Some of the close ups are mesmerizing as they show the resemblance of caviar, while others look like ethereal ice sculptures. Lastly, there is a small opaque white sphere of Precious Opal that can be seen in the center of the piece giving it an almost other worldly quality. This one is certainly different and eye-catching, and a worthwhile purchase for anybody who likes this kind of material.

Opal (variety: “Opal-AN”) (variety: “Hyalite Opal”)

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 2.7 x 1.7 x 1.5 cm (thumbnail)

Gemmy, spherical groups of glassy soft yellow-orange Hyalite Opal free of matrix. The gentle color is caused by minor amounts of iron oxide. It’s nearly water-clear in areas, but because of a bit of surface damage, is priced to sell. As you can see in one of the close up photos, there’s an area that resembles “pulled taffy”, with the swirling, parallel lines that give it a non-mineral appearance.

Specimen Size: 2.8 x 2.6 x 2.1 cm (thumbnail)

A rather gemmy, soft golden orange color, lustrous, globular group of “Blood Vessel Opal” / Hyalite Opal featuring a group of intergrown “spheres” which get their color from tiny inclusions of iron oxide. A little below the surface, the specimen shows the thin “capillary”-esque lines that give it such a unique appearance. One typically does not see Hyalite Opal of this quality and color on the market. Only a tiy bit of damage on the back, and attractive to be sure.

More of a reference piece, this specimen shows the distinguishing “blood vessels” which are caused by thin lines of reddish-orange iron oxide below the surface. Although the piece is gemmy and has good color, it is contacted in a few places, and would serve better as an inexpensive addition to a suite of Opals.

One of the most lustrous pieces in the update. Highly glassy “beads” of gemmy, orange to nearly colorless Hyalite / “Blood Vessel” Opal from this new find in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The inclusions are created by iron oxide, and give the piece wonderfully strong red-orange coloration and thin “capillary”-like lines where the nickname “Blood Vessel Opal” comes from. A tiny bit of attached matrix makes for a great overall piece, and a worthwhile pickup for anybody interested in the material.

Locality: San Luis Potosi, Mexico

Specimen Size: 3.3 x 2.8 x 2.8 cm (miniature)

A noteworthy large thumbnail / toenail specimen of this beautiful newly discovered material This has a dramatic formation of Opal with graceful, smooth “ridges” of tightly packed glass-like “beads” of Hyalite which can be seen on all sides of the piece. The specimen doesn’t look like a mineral because of the almost organic nature of its shape. Secondly, the color is very attractrive as it shows the distinctive “Blood Vessel Opal” appearance with small areas of red-orange inclusions of iron oxide which have manifested in thin “capillary”-esque lines below the surface of the Opal. Lastly, there is a small opaque white layer of Precious Opal that can be seen in the center and back of the piece giving it a pleasing overall presence. This one is lovely and eye-catching, and a nearly damage free all the way around. One could display the piece from a few angles as well. A tiny bit of attached matrix at the base makes for a great touch as well.
