FLUORITE on SPHALERITE

Locality: Elmwood, Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee

Specimen Size: 8.5 x 7.5 x 6 cm (small cabinet)

This long storied and now defunct historic U.S. locality has produced some of the world's finest Calcite and Fluorite specimens extant. This piece is bursting with some of the best "grape-jelly" purple color Fluorite cubes that I've seen from Elmwood. This piece is virtually undamaged and nearly every Fluorite cube has at least one phantom. If that wasn't enough, the Fluorites are sitting atop great quality, gemmy reddish-brown Sphalerite crystals. These pieces are instant classics from the U.S. and this one really has it all. (Crystal Size: 2 cm.)

COBALTITE on matrix

Locality: Hakansboda, Lindesberg, Vstmanland, Sweden

Specimen Size: 6.5 x 5.0 x 4.9 cm (small cabinet)

First off, let me say that this specimen is a nightmare to photograph and the piece looks much better in person than the photos would indicate. Some of the best crystallized Cobaltite specimens in the world are found at this locality, and it is very difficult to obtain matrix specimens of this material. This piece is a good size specimen from this locality and any time you can find an isolated matrix Cobaltite crystal over 1 centimeter across, it's always impressive. (Crystal Size: 1 cm.)

CARROLLITE

Locality: Kamoya II (South Kamoya mine), Kambove city, near Likasi (1OO Miles from Kolwezy) Shaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire)

Specimen Size: 3.2 x 3.2 x 2.4 cm (miniature)

A few years ago, this probably would have been one of the largest Carrollite crystals in the world, and even after the tremendous find in 2001, this piece stands out as a large crystal for the species. All in all, this is an exceptional crystal for this very rare copper cobalt nickel sulfide. This bright silvery-white color crystal is predominantly octahedral in form (which is less common habit for this material) very distinct repeating cubic modifications on the terminations of the all six ends of the octahedron. The most impressive feature of this crystal is that it has absolutely mirror bright luster (thus making it very difficult to photograph) and is about as sharp as any crystal I've seen from this locality. There is a contact along two sides, but the sheer size and overall quality of this piece makes up for it in my mind. To the best of my knowledge, there are no more of these crystals coming out of the ground and they are sure to go up in value if the locality doesn't produce any more world class specimens. For a piece of this caliber with such great sharpness and splendent luster, it is very fairly priced.

NATIVE COPPER

Locality: Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia

Specimen Size: 3.3 x 1.6 x 1 cm (miniature)

First off, let me preface this by saying that I purchased this specimen labeled as being from Tsumeb. I haven't seen many Native Coppers from Tsumeb, but they do exist, and this one has similar form to ones I've seen in the past. Any help on verifying the locality info on this one would be much appreciated. Regardless, this is still a very aesthetic showy crystal group with distinctly sharp crystals in arborescent form. The piece is virtually undamaged, but it is a too big for a thumbnail.

BARITE

Locality: Leeson Pocket, Stoneham, Weld County, Colorado

Specimen Size: 5.2 x 3.0 x 2.2 cm (small cabinet)

Here we have a great group of sharp, lustrous, and very gemmy crystals of some of the best quality Barites ever collected in Colorado. Typically the crystals from this locality have good blue-grey color, but they're rarely as gemmy as the ones above. Keep in mind that this locality has produced any good crystals in over 10 years and this piece is from the great find from the 1980's. Every Colorado collector should have one of these specimens in their collection.
