New Purple Quartz (Chalcedony / Agate) from Mamuju, Indonesia

During the latter half of 2016, we started seeing these unique and interesting specimens coming out of Indonesia with labels varying from “Chalcedony” to “Agate” to Quartz and “Amethyst”.  Some people have turned to using the phrase “Grape Agate” or “Grape Chalcedony” due to the purple color and the fact that they have formed in groups that look like bunches of grapes.  There are probably 100 terms to describe cryptocrystalline / drusy / massive uncrystallized Quartz, so it’s fair to say they’re Quartz and go from there.  For the sake of this update, I’ve decided to label them as Quartz (variety: “Chalcedony” / “Agate”) but due to the fact that they have tiny crystallized areas upon magnification, I think one could easily refer to them as “Amethyst” as well.

We made some contacts overseas and were able to get our hands on a few lots of what we consider to be some of the best quality and color specimens of this exciting new material.  We’ve literally seen hundreds of these pieces, and after spending a lot of time carefully selecting pieces with good aesthetics, and very minimal to no damage, we’re quite pleased with the lot we have to offer.

The biggest problem we’ve found with a lot of these specimens is that they can be dull (poor luster) with a grey color, and unpleasant overall presentation.  You’ll see that the pieces presented here have superior color with sparkling luster, great form and good internal gemminess.  These represent what we feel is the top of what is available at the time of this posting.

I think what attracted dealers and collectors was the fact that it was a common mineral with a less than common color in the mineral world from a new locality. Keep in mind that purple is not a common color for mineral specimens.  If you take away Amethyst, suddenly there are only a few species that form in collector quality, well-crystallized examples (e.g., Spinel, Scapolite, Spodumene, Zoisite).

Lastly, with a lot of new discoveries, it’s hard to say how much more will be available, and in what quality.   Often the best material tends to find its way to the market first, and is typically the least expensive.  We’ve seen prices all over the board for this material (one piece in Sainte Marie 2016 was priced at over $10,000!), but for the most part, specimens have been priced affordably compared to what we’ve seen publicly.

Quartz (variety: Quartz (variety: Quartz (variety: Quartz (variety: Quartz (variety: Quartz (variety: Quartz (variety:

No. QTZINDO111601 - SOLD

Quartz (variety: "Chalcedony") (variety: "Agate") ("Grape Chalcedony / Grape Agate")

Locality: Mamuju area, Sulawesi Barat Province, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Specimen Size: 19.3 x 12.8 x 8.4 cm (large cabinet)
Largest Sphere: 0.6 cm

The best large cabinet display specimen that we have to offer of the so-called "Grape Chalcedony / Grape Agate". A combination of fine brilliant purple radial aggregates / "balls" that resemble a bunch of grapes with wonderful three-dimensional cavernous form and notably sparkling luster. Up close each individual "ball" has tiny crystallized / crystalline areas. Additionally, the spheres are singularly larger than most from the find as they measure up to 6 mm in diameter. The color trends to more of a lighter lavender and silvery-purple hue in areas, but for the most part, it has some of the best color with the finest luster you will see in this material. The fact that it’s in such good condition is what blows me away. Both sides are crystallized, and with the exception of a few spots where it was clearly removed from the pocket wall, you can’t find any points of attachment. It was somewhat hard to photograph, and I would say better in person. If you want a stunning big showcase rock of this material that isn’t priced around 10K, don’t miss out on this one, as the majority of the larger pieces suffer from having either poor color, poor luster, and/or lots of damage, but this one stands out as a real treasure in my mind.

Locality: Mamuju area, Sulawesi Barat Province, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Specimen Size: 16.2 x 11.8 x 4.3 cm (large cabinet)
Largest Sphere: 0.4 cm

A beautiful large cabinet sized, dual-sided display specimen loaded with incredibly rich purple color "balls" of this new "Grape Chalcedony / Grape Agate" from Indonesia. I think my favorite aspect of the piece is how each side tells a different story as the front features hundreds of good sized spheres with what is the best color we’ve seen from the material combined with stellar brilliant luster. The reverse side of the piece feature smaller "balls" of Chalcedony with a slightly more subdued luster and a softer overall hue. Amazingly for a piece this size, there is virtually no damage! There is a small spot on the end / bottom where it was detached from the pocket wall, but it does seem to have some recrystallization so it’s nearly a "floater" as it’s crystallized about 99% of the way around. It’s not just a flat plate, as it does have good relief in the form of a raised area on the top / side. It will display beautifully in a case, as the color, luster and form will immediately draw the eye. Pieces of this size with the strong purple hue along with a visible gleaming luster were few and far between in my experience, so don’t miss out if you want one of the bigger specimens with all the best qualities of the material.

Specimen Size: 14.4 x 6.8 x 4.6 cm (cabinet)
Largest Sphere: 0.6 cm

Here we have a very beautiful and showy display specimen. The combination of the gorgeous purple color "Grape Chalcedony / Grape Agate" combined with the hundreds of micro white "rice grain" to "sheaf"-like shaped crystals of micro white Quartz is very rarely seen in my experience with this material. The micro white Quartz can be seen on both sides the piece, which look beautiful with a loupe and even better under the microscope. No damage on either side, and the only real point of attachment that I can see is a small point on the upper edge where it must have been removed from the pocket. The two-tone effect, combined with the wonderful quality and excellent displayability make it a very worthwhile piece of this exciting material. I should also point out that this piece displays well without the aid of a base or clay.

Locality: Mamuju area, Sulawesi Barat Province, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Specimen Size: 10.8 x 9.2 x 3.2 cm (cabinet)
Largest Sphere: 0.6 cm

A beautiful structural group of radiating "balls" of this attractive material from Mamuju. Individual spheres measure up to 6 mm across which is larger than the majority we’ve seen on other specimens. I like the way that they increase in size from the bottom of the specimen to the top corner. The color is a medium purple with a soft matte luster, but a few spots have a slight sparkling drusy appearance. Areas of moss green colored Celadonite can be seen here and there for a pleasing overall two-tone color effect. It’s not completely undamaged, as a few of the spheres are contacted, but for the most part, it’s in great shape, and due to its aesthetic and showy nature, I think the rough spots are forgivable.

Specimen Size: 12.0 x 6.2 x 2.8 cm (cabinet)
Largest Sphere: 0.4 cm

One of the most, if not THE most luminously lustrous specimens in the lot. The combination of the gorgeous purple color "Grape Chalcedony / Grape Agate" combined with the exterior shimmer is amazing. Additionally, there are dozens if not hundreds of micro white "rice grain" to "sheaf"-like shaped crystals of white gemmy Quartz on both sides the piece, which look beautiful with a loupe and even better under the microscope. No damage on either side, and the only real point of attachment that I can see is a small "rib" on the edge where it must have been removed from the pocket. Perhaps my favorite aspect of the piece is the way it glows when it’s backlit, which is typically not possible due to the thickness of the other specimens. FINE quality, color, luster and very showy! This is one of my favorite specimens in the lot as it covers all the best characteristics of what makes these pieces great.

Specimen Size: 8.2 x 8.2 x 2.6 cm (small cabinet)
Largest Sphere: 0.3 cm

This piece is certainly one of the most photogenic and aesthetic specimens from this recent discovery in Indonesia. Soft lavender colored radiating "balls" or spheres have grown in sectional "ribs" to form what resembles a cast or a replacement after another species, but I honestly think it was just a fortuitous growth, and no actual replacement occurred. The piece is crystallized all the way around, and is a near "floater" save one tiny spot where it was removed from the pocket. One does not encounter pieces with such dramatic flair and form when it comes to these specimens, and we don’t have another like to offer.

An attractive medium purple color group of botryoidal Chalcedony from the new find in Indonesia. Associated moss-green Celadonite makes for a great contrast, and both the purple and the green are not at all muted or grey like so many from this discovery. The upper edge has a contact along with the bottom where it was clearly removed from the pocket, hence the reduced price, but overall it’s showy, and the size of the individual spheres is larger than the majority of pieces I’ve seen from the find.

Largest Sphere: 0.5 cm

Simply one of the best examples we’ve seen from the locality. A fine quality specimen of the first order as this piece has everything one would want for the material. First the rich purple hue is about as dark as any other specimen I can remember seeing of these so-called "Grape Chalcedony / Grape Agate specimens" from Indonesia. Secondly, the shimmering, almost "wet" looking vitreous luster is second to none in the lot. Thirdly, the size of the individual "balls" is very good compared to a large percentage from this discovery. Lastly, with the exception of one small corner, I can’t find any damage on the piece. The superior combination of the fine color, gorgeous luster, wonderful aesthetics and overall presentation make this a desirable and worthwhile piece for your collection. Pieces like this are few and far between, as so many countless pieces have poor color, dull luster or smaller spheres, so having the best of all aspects in one specimen is significant in my mind.

Shimmering, rather vitreous luster combined with the beautiful violet colored spherical aggregates make this beautiful variety of Quartz from Indonesia a very pleasing overall specimen. This is why the material gets the nickname "Grape Chalcedony" or "Grape Agate". This piece really does resemble a bunch of grapes, as the isolation between each "ball" is noteworthy compared to others from the find. It’s crystallized all the way around, and is as close to a "floater" as anything we have in the lot. Great quality for this material, especially with the wonderful luster taken into consideration.

A sculptural and all around pretty piece of this attractive Chalcedony from Indonesia. The piece formed in a somewhat arborescent form as it has the shape of a shrub or a small tree in my mind. Beautiful medium purple colored "balls" of Chalcedony forming a lovely display specimen. The luster is good compared to most as it has a soft velvety appearance. Additionally, there are only a few tiny contacts, but no real damage that I can see with the naked eye, and the piece actually displays well from either side. If you’re looking for quality and displayability that won’t break the bank, this is a very worthwhile pickup for you collection.

Specimen Size: 4.2 x 3.7 x 2.7 cm (miniature)
Largest Sphere: 0.5 cm

This gorgeous miniature specimen is loaded with top color, luster, aesthetics and good sized "balls" of Chalcedony. This Siberian purple color is as dark as I have seen for the material, and when it’s combined with the gorgeous rich green colored Celadonite, it makes for a stunning two-tone effect. In addition, the luster is really top quality with a glistening vitreous appearance all the way around. Speaking of which, the piece can be displayed from several angles as you can see in the photos, and it’s truly one of the most eye-catching three-dimensional pieces in the lot. The isolation of the each individual sphere really allows the piece to stand out from others we’ve seen. Were it not for a tiny edge on the bottom of the piece where it was clearly removed from the pocket, it would be a perfect "floater". With that said, the piece is still nearly 100% damage free. I can’t say enough about this one, it really stands out as one of the best pieces in the parcel, and if you want the best color, quality, luster and aesthetics with larger sized spheres and the Celadonite association, don’t miss out on this one.

When it comes to sheer gemminess, this is one of the finest pieces in the parcel. You can clearly see in the photos that this piece has superior internal clarity, especially when backlit. The "cores" of each sphere glow with a rich purple hue, surrounded by a softer lilac exterior. The individual "balls" on this particular piece are not only some of the largest we’ve seen, but they have actual micro crystal faces(!), not just a simply drusy appearance. As a matter of fact, there are even a few single hexagonal Amethyst crystals as well, which is quite rare for the material. It’s contacted in a few spots, hence the reduced price, but it’s still fine quality and very eye-catching. If any piece in the lot looks like a bunch of grapes, it could be this one.

A rather sculptural and three-dimensional specimen of lovely purple Chalcedony from Indonesia. The color transitions to a soft silvery lilac hue on the back, and every side has twists and turns created from flowing "bands" of Chalcedony that run all over. This piece certainly looks like the bunches of grapes for which material has received the nickname "Grape Chalcedony" or "Grape Agate" No real damage and very attractive.

When it comes to bright dazzling luster, this piece might be the best in the lot. The individual "balls" on this particular piece are not only some of the largest we’ve seen, but they have actual micro crystal faces(!), not just a simply drusy appearance. Interestingly enough, some of the spheres are completely included with rich moss green Celadonite, creating single green "balls" associated with un-included dark purple Chalcedony orbs. It’s nearly crystallized all the way around, save one edge where it was clearly removed from the pocket wall. The combination of the sparkling exterior, impressive internal gemminess and purple and green colors leave nothing to be desired. One of my favorites in this parcel.

A good representative group of this attractive material from Indonesia. A sturdy, yet three-dimensional specimen of "Grape Chalcedony / Grape Agate", but not just with the fine purple color, as it’s highlighted with lovely moss green colored Celadonite inclusions in alternating bands to create a beautiful two-tone effect. I think this color combination looks best with the strong purple Chalcedony as seen in this specimen. Some of the Celadonite spots almost have the appearance of melted candle wax, as they are more amorphous than the "balls" of the actual Chalcedony. The piece has excellent three-dimensional form as you can see from the photos, which is not typical for the material as many of them are somewhat "flat" and boring. A few minor rough spots keep it from being completely damage free, but overall it’s actually in really good condition, and looks great in person. A great example of this unusual material that’s very fairly priced for the size and quality.

What a beautiful large thumbnail sized display piece of this attractive material from this exciting discovery. The exterior luster has a dazzling "sugary" / drusy effect that is rarely seen in this material. As you can see from the photos, the piece glows when backlit, and the purple hue of the Chalcedony shines along with the soft lilac Quartz areas and the gentle green zones of Celadonite. No damage that I can see, and it's even crystallized on the bottom, so this is about as close to a "floater" as any other piece in the lot. It’s not typical for the discovery in terms of color or form, but it certainly stands out for its unique appearance.

Quartz (variety: "Chalcedony") (variety: "Agate") ("Grape Chalcedony / Grape Agate") with Celadonite

Locality: Mamuju area, Sulawesi Barat Province, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Specimen Size: 1.7 x 1.3 x 1.1 cm (thumbnail)
Largest Sphere: 0.3 cm

This piece is a genuine "floater" as I can’t find a single point of attachment, and it’s crystallized completely all the way around. A beautiful chain of "sugary" / drusy spheres of lilac colored Chalcedony with good three-dimensional form. For a thumbnail, it’s not only showy, but good quality! Soft green Celadonite can be seen here and there when the piece is backlit. If you collect thumbnails, this would make a great addition to your collection, as fine crystallized thumbnails of this material are nearly impossible to find.

A truly eye-catching and aesthetic thumbnail specimen of Chalcedony featuring a pair of rich purple "eyes" on each side of the light lilac colored "body".
