Stephanite Specimens from the Porco Mine, Bolivia

Stephanite is one of the most sought after “collector’s” sulfosalts out there.  Fine specimens are only found in a handful of worldwide localities, and crystals rarely exceed one inch in size.

Some of the finest Stephanites in existence are those from the famous Silver deposits such as the Husky Mine in Canada, various mines in Saxony, Germany, and localities in Mexico such as Arizpe and Fresnillo.

Despite the amount of Silver present in the large number of ore bodies in Bolivia, Stephanite is an elusive and often disregarded species.  Considering its rather simple chemistry, (Ag5SbS4), the amazing lack of fine specimens on the market makes this species one of the top Silver sulfosalts for collectors.

Recently, the immensely important historic Porco Mine in Bolivia produced what are undoubtedly the finest Bolivian Stephanites seen in many years.  Prior to this discovery, I had only seen two pieces of Stephanite in my life from Bolivia.  Considering the quality, quantity and size of the specimens found, this is an incredible opportunity for collectors to obtain a fine crystallized piece of a well known, yet rarely seen Silver species.

The following specimens represent the top pieces that I obtained from the find.  Very few were available, and it appears that now they have disappeared as quickly as they were found.  I was amazed at the wide variety of crystal habits from a single find, ranging from slender striated prisms, to parallel growth groups, to rather blocky, stout single crystals.  Some of the pieces have a faint yet distinct pink and green patina, not unlike the specimens seen at the Husky Mine in Canada.  My source at the Porco Mine tells me that the area that produced these specimens has been mined through, and it is impossible to determine if more will be found.

I have been patiently waiting in the hopes that more specimens would be found, and now that it appears there will be no more, I am prepared to offer these specimens on the site.  I am offering these pieces for sale before taking them to any shows.  I brought them to the Denver Show in September only to have them described in upcoming articles and show reports, but none were offered for sale.  I have priced the specimens fairly based upon what they are (how good they are) and where they’re from.  You will have to look very hard to find any Bolivian Stephanites, even in old museum collections.  Between my father and myself, we have been dealing in Bolivian minerals since the early 1970s, and these are the only Stephanites that I have personally seen come out of the ground.

It must be noted that none of the specimens are 100% perfect, due to the brittle nature of the mineral, and the rather crude mining techniques that were implemented to extract the pieces when they were discovered.  The photos do not do the pieces justice, and they honestly look better in person, so please keep this in mind when viewing the specimens.

As I mentioned above, it is not known if more specimens will be forthcoming, and typically my experience with discoveries such as this has proven that they are often one time finds.

Stephanite

Locality: Porco Mine, Agua de Castilla, Antonio Quijarro Province, Potosi Department, Bolivia

Specimen Size: 1.9 x 1.6 x 1.2 cm (thumbnail)

A sculptural multi-crystal group with an aesthetic, somewhat stepped form, comprising parallel growth prisms with good luster and a deep metallic gun metal appearance. For the most part, the piece is in good shape, despite a few minor abrasions. The slight striations and accenting modifications on the terminations are a nice touch to this attractive thumbnail specimen.

Stephanite

Locality: Porco Mine, Agua de Castilla, Antonio Quijarro Province, Potosi Department, Bolivia

Specimen Size: 1.8 x 1.4 x 1.3 cm (thumbnail)

An attractive, and certainly three-dimensional group of striated, metallic, dark silvery color prisms. The photos make the piece look a bit rough, and it's not as distracting in person. This piece has some of the best luster in the lot, with an almost white appearance when rotated in the light.

Stephanite

Locality: Porco Mine, Agua de Castilla, Antonio Quijarro Province, Potosi Department, Bolivia

Specimen Size: 2.2 x 2.1 x 1.7 cm (thumbnail)

Certainly one of the larger specimens in the lot, just loaded with crystals. There are well over a dozen, bright, sharp, lustrous, metallic, silvery color modified orthorhombic prisms in parallel growth. The eye-catching striations along with the brilliant reflections seen from the more broad crystal faces are a wonderful compliment. A lovely full-sized thumbnail of good quality with great aesthetics.

Stephanite

Locality: Porco Mine, Agua de Castilla, Antonio Quijarro Province, Potosi Department, Bolivia

Specimen Size: 2.0 x 1.4 x 1.4 cm (thumbnail)

A very well-formed, stout, blocky prism of Stephanite with a somewhat matte luster and a silvery-grey color. There is a gentle nuance to the piece where the base of the crystal has a skeletal appearance that accents the geometric appearance at the termination. A little bit of edge-wear keeps the piece from being perfect, but overall, it is a worthwhile and attractive thumbnail display specimen of this hard to find sulfosalt.

Stephanite

Locality: Porco Mine, Agua de Castilla, Antonio Quijarro Province, Potosi Department, Bolivia

Specimen Size: 1.9 x 1.6 x 0.8 cm (thumbnail)

A very well-formed, stout, striated and somewhat blocky prism of Stephanite with a nice bright luster and a metallic silvery color. There is a slight skeletal growth near the center of the crystal, and the little accenting "side car" crystal at the base makes for a great touch. The condition is very good compared to most I have seen, and the elegant form is certainly desirable in this material.

Stephanite

Locality: Porco Mine, Agua de Castilla, Antonio Quijarro Province, Potosi Department, Bolivia

Specimen Size: 2.9 x 1.6 x 1.2 cm (thumbnail)

The largest specimen in the lot with some of the BRIGHTEST luster I have seen for the material. The external sheen is reminiscent of a fine quality Bournonite with a white/silvery appearance. The main crystal is highly modified alternating between sharp, crisp faces and accenting striations. A beautiful large thumbnail / small toenail sized specimen and in very good shape overall from the standpoint of damage.

A nice layered specimen comprising smaller metallic prisms of Stephanite in parallel growth. The piece actually has a light pink and green patina, resembling specimens from the famed Husky Mine in Canada. A great representative specimen of this material, and in great shape overall compared to most from the find.

A group of slender, well-formed, striated prisms (some are doubly-terminated) in parallel growth. The color is a soft metallic silvery-grey. The crystals have beautiful modifications, especially at the terminations, and the center of the main crystal has a slight skeletal/"hoppered" growth like Acanthite.

There are some slight striations on the piece, but there are many fairly broad bright faces with excellent luster. A scant number of "Wilbers" are present, but overall, the piece is very attractive and worthwhile for the price.

Stephanite

Locality: Porco Mine, Agua de Castilla, Antonio Quijarro Province, Potosi Department, Bolivia

Specimen Size: 2.4 x 2.0 x 1.2 cm (thumbnail)

Without a doubt, this larger sized thumbnail has the best luster of any piece in the lot. The form along with the bright silvery metallic appearance honestly are better than most Stephanites I have seen from any world locality. The complex modified appearance of the crystals along with the general thickness make it a very worthwhile specimen. The photos simply do not do the piece justice, as the gentle balance of narrow striations and broad metallic faces create a fantastic display piece. One of my favorites in the lot.

Stephanite

Specimen Size: 1.9 x 1.7 x 0.7 cm (thumbnail)

Quite possibly the most distinct crystal on any specimen in the lot with a beautiful "blade" like shape. The smaller accenting crystals at the base/side of the specimen make for a great touch. The fairly broad and bright faces along with the eye-catching metallic silvery appearance create a fantastic thumbnail specimen of this hard to find material. The piece can easily be displayed from several angles, and is as close to damage free as any specimen in this update. Aesthetically speaking, this is about as dramatic as it gets based upon what I have seen. If you want a great quality display specimen of this highly sought after Silver species, from one of the oldest/most important mines in Bolivia, this is the one to buy.

Stephanite

Locality: Porco Mine, Agua de Castilla, Antonio Quijarro Province, Potosi Department, Bolivia

Specimen Size: 2.5 x 1.8 x 1.3 cm (thumbnail)

Without question, this is the largest/thickest single crystal Stephanite crystal that I have seen from Bolivia. It is also incredibly blocky, thick and amazingly well-formed for the species. To add a final touch to the piece, there is a fantastic skeletal area near the termination resembling the "hoppered" appearance that is associated with other silver sulfosalts such as Acanthite. The eye-catching stout form along with the gorgeous silvery metallic luster makes it a fantastic full-sized thumbnail from any world locality. Honestly, the piece was fairly difficult to photograph, and it looks MUCH better in person!
