Without a doubt, one of the most popular non-sulfide or non-carbonate species from the Eagle mine are the now hard to find, golden Baryte crystals. This piece hosts a few dozen, incredibly glassy, very sharp, well-formed, rich golden color crystals with excellent gemminess / transparency and somewhat blocky form. The overall quality is excellent with no real damage to speak of except for one corner of a crystal on the periphery. You don’t see these anymore, and along with specimens from the Sherman Mine in Leadville, they are the best golden Barytes from Colorado. This piece really stands out from most others from the Eagle mine as the crystals formed on contrasting white Quartz, which is not common from this locality.
The Eagle Mine was the center of lead and zinc mining in Colorado for a time and produced some of the state’s most memorable mineral specimens, along with the neighboring Groundhog Mine that produced the finest Wire Gold specimens in the world extant!
