The Ouray Amphitheater has produced some of the most diverse and beautiful Quartz specimens from any locality in Colorado. This piece is one of the VERY few specimens of Amethyst that I’ve seen from the Ouray Amphitheater. I love this piece, because it’s so different from what I’m used to seeing from this area. The piece was collected by Robert Stoufer in 1992 and is one of the most unique and pleasing Quartz / Amethyst specimens that I know of.

First off, the piece is nearly a “floater” showing only the smallest of points of attachment and is crystallized 99.9% of the way around. The crystals flare in all directions, and some are even doubly terminated as you rotate the piece in your hand. There is no real “display” side as I think the piece can be shown from about six different directions with pleasing results. Many of the Quartz crystals themselves show attractive tapered habit crystals with accentuating narrowing prisms. And don’t forget that the largest crystal on the piece shows a slight purple Amethyst color, which is almost unheard of from this area! If you collect specimens of Quartz from Colorado, don’t miss out on this beautiful display piece. A special mineral specimen from this well-known Quartz producing region.
