Fluorapatite on "Mountain Leather"
Fluorapatite on "Mountain Leather"

This piece comes to us from the Kay Robertson collection (#8407) and the label states that it's from the Untere Riffelmoräne (Lower Riffel Moraine) in the Stubachtal (Stubach Valley) of Salzburg. I've seen specimens from the Riffel Glacier, but I don't know if I've seen a piece labeled as coming from the actual moraine of the glacier prior to this piece.
A sharp, lustrous, translucent, medium yellow color hexagonal crystal of Fluorapatite measuring 8 mm sitting on fibrous lightweight "Mountain Leather" matrix. The "Mountain Leather" is possibly a species like Chrysotile, but there is nothing quite like it in the mineral world, as it has a strange almost waxy feel when you hold it in your hands. No damage that I can see with the naked eye, and a great piece to add to a collection of Alpine minerals or worldwide Apatites just based upon the rare locality.
