It goes without saying that Tsumeb is one of the most prolific localities in the world. The reason that is is one of the premier mineral localities in history is because the mine produced exemplary specimens of a wide number of minerals ranging from common to extraordinarily rare. A large number of minerals from Tsumeb are ranked as "best in the world", which makes Tsumeb such a highly sought after destination for collectors. One of the most well-known mineral species from Tsumeb is Smithsonite, found in a wide range of colors, due to various chromophores like copper, cadmium and cobalt.
This fine small cabinet sized specimen features a coverage of beautiful, sharp, well-formed, gemmy/translucent, intense pink colored, rhombs measuring up to 1.4 cm sitting on matrix. The gorgeous pink color is caused by cobalt content, and it is beautifully enhanced by the vitreous to pearly luster to the point where the crystals virtually glow in certain lighting. This color and habit of crystals is so distinctive for Smithsonite from this locality. A highly representative piece showing the fine quality that came out of Tsumeb in the mid-20th century. Good quality and very eye-catching, with very little damage on the display side. As you all know, Tsumeb minerals are not only highly sought after, but their value seems to increase daily on the market, and pieces like this with such fine color and quality are highly desirable among collectors.
