Rutile is known from thousands of localities around the world, but there was a very limited find of some of the finest quality crystallized examples of the species in the early 1970s in Brazil. My father, Richard Kosnar, was on site at Diamantina when they were coming out and purchased a select few pieces of these amazing Rutiles. There are two characteristics that make this piece so special.

First is the overall quality, as it is a superb, very well-crystallized, razor-sharp, brilliantly lustrous, metallic, deep red colored, reticulated twinned crystal group, and a complete "floater" to boot as it's crystallized on all sides. The second, and more impressive aspect of the piece, is that it is incredibly GEMMY, which may not ordinarily be a major factor when it comes to Rutile, but you usually only see "needle"-thin crystals that will pass light, and the amount of transparency that you can see when this piece is backlit, is mind-blowing considering the thickness of the crystals.

This is ostensibly one of the finest crystallized Rutile specimens ever seen from any Brazilian locality for the simple fact that it is GEM GRADE Rutile in addition to being superbly crystallized. You just don't see crystals of this thickness that will pass light, and as you can see, there are deep glowing fiery hues inside of this specimen when it's backlit. If you're a thumbnail collector, or if you're a more discerning collector who appreciates top quality crystallized examples of any species, regardless of the size, this is an important and historic specimen that would make a superb addition to any collection.

Ex. Richard A. Kosnar collection; he personally acquired the piece in Brazil in 1972
