Datolite

Datolite is a not a very common gem, as most localities do not produce gem material for cutting stones of any size. This gem is a very attractive stone with good brilliance and excellent cutting. The stone is very slightly included, which is not uncommon for Datolite, especially from this locality!

The rough from which this stone was cut came from a specimen collected by my father, Richard A. Kosnar in 1964 at the famous Prospect Park Quarry in New Jersey. The stone is not your typical colorless material, but actually shows a light greenish-yellow hue, which is much more desirable, even in smaller stones. It has a very attractive Cushion Brilliant cut.

With the Russian Datolite disappearing from the market over the last 10 years, and nothing to ever come out of Prospect Park again (the quarry is closed and has been filled in for a housing development) and no other sources of gem material available, these stone are becoming more and more difficult to find in any quantity. A wonderful and hard to find, rare U.S. gemstone for all you collectors out there.
