Tourmalines are among the most diverse and popular gems in the world. They're one of the few gems that occur in natural bicolor / multi-colored stones. A small percentage of the top gem Tourmalines on the market today are from Nigeria and remain as some of the most attractive examples of ever found.
Here we have a magnificently impressive and notably large world-class Tourmaline gem from the limited finds at Ogbomosho, Nigeria in the 1990s. This outstanding, “Portuguese Cushion” cut gem is remarkable for several reasons. First is the obvious size, as the stone weighs nearly 50 carats! Now, that’s not to say that a stone this size is unheard of, but what truly makes it such a significant stone is the fact that it has eye-clean clarity! It is important to note that Tourmaline is classified as a Type-3 gemstone, which means that inclusions are almost always present and accepted by dealers or collectors, so when you have a monstrous carat stone like this with such impressive clarity, it’s incredibly rare.
Additionally, the gem displays an alluring orange hue, but when the gem is viewed on its side or directly up through the pavilion, you can see there is a mixture of pink and orange shades, creating a beautiful “sherbet”-like mixture of eye-catching pastel colors. This is a truly a magnificent example of this phenomenal material from Nigeria which hasn’t been available on the market for over 20 years.
